Multiplayer Games:
We've setup a thread for everyone to organise their multiplayer games in and also setup example times and dates for most people to meet up and start games. These are what we hope to be the main times for people to be around and want to play games together.

The times are:
4pm EST (9pm GMT) Saturdays & Sundays
9pm EST (2am GMT)
Saturdays & Sundays

If you want to organise other games please go ahead using the same topic to consolidate all the information in one place and hopefully get more games together within our community. These games are for PvP, PvAI & PvPvAIso come along and we'll get some games going!

Screenshots:
We've setup a thread so you can all post your screenshots to share with us the Distant Stars team and its players. Im sure we're all intrigued to see what kinds of battles and events you've all been having on the mod aswell.

Lore:
We know some of you guys love to role play whilst using Distant Stars, and here's a topic for you guys to post all of your role playing stories, character profiles and anything else you can imagine.

Maps:
Some of you avid map makers out there have produced some great maps but never really had them recognised because they've got lost. Well here's a topic for you to post a link to the download (we can even provide mirrors if necessary) a screenshot or two of the map for us all the preview and if enough people like it we'll even include the map in with the actual mod!

Please visit our website and for more information, change logs, downloads, and to report bugs. Our website can be found here: http://distantstars.mmobase.com

Open the user.setting file (using Notepad, Wordpad or any text editor) and scroll down to the bottom 7 lines from the bottom is the line:
LogOutput FALSE
Change FALSE to TRUE

If you get these log files to us (you can just paste them in to a forum post) we can hopefully get your issues sorted.

Frequently Asked Questions

All files are compressed using 7Zip to shrink the download filesize. To extract these files you must use WinRAR or 7Zip.
Any Patches should overwrite the original install directory, either by extracting over the original folder, or cut/copy & pasting over the existing file/folder structure.

1) My game keeps crashing, is there anything I can do to stop it?
i) Are you running the game on maximum (highest) settings? if so, lower them to High or Medium, there is a known issue with the game using up too much memory, there is nothing we can do about this, also no matter how powerful your pc is, it is affected by this issue no matter the pc it is not above this crashing issue, it is a game problem not a hardware one, so quite simply lower your settings. If you still have an issue with crashing see point two.
ii) Give us as detailed information as possible about the crash, what was happening at the time of the crash, what races, ships, abilities were involved. If you can supply a Debug Log (see above for more information about logging) and post a bug report on our website.

2) The loading screens and portrait pictures dont appear properly, whats wrong?
i) This is an issue with ATI based graphics cards (rarely affects Nvidia based cards) we're looking in to the issue.

3) Why dont you support converting Distant Stars in to TXT format?
i) Quite simply many things can go wrong with converting your mod to TXT, we cant help you with something you've probably broken yourself.

4) Can I mod Distant Stars for myself?
i) Yes you can however please do not distribute our mod or our mod that you have edited to the public. You must ask for permission to do so, we will regrettably stop distributing our mod to all if users abuse our work.

5) Your mod is in BIN format I can't edit the files, what can I do?
i) You can convert the mod to TXT format however we wont offer any support to versions of the mod that have been converted to TXT.

6) Why is Distant Stars distributed in BIN format?
i) Mods load faster in BIN format and are less likely to have issues in this format.

7) I'm having trouble installing the MOD, do you have any more instructions?
i) Carbon was kind enough to do some more advanced instructions out here.

8) Is there any way to make new maps for Distant Stars using GalaxyForge?
i) Within the Distant Stars Extras folder there is a folder called Galaxy Forge, Copy and Paste this folder (or its contents) over your original Galaxy Forge folder (or its contents) replacing any files if it asks you to. When you start Galaxy Forge next you'll be able to use all of our planets.

Or, the DIY approach (without custom icons):

ii) The GalaxyForge supplied by the devs will still work with our Mod, however to be able to access all of our planetary bonuses, templates, planet types and stars you will need to take our GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (found in the GameInfo folder of the mod) and place it in to your GalaxyForge folder, overwriting the original GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (if you still wish to make maps for the original game keep a backup of the original file). This will allow you to use all of the Galaxy changes included in our mod.

Note: Any maps made for Distant Stars will not work with other Mods. See #8.2 for DIY instructions for map making or take the appropriate files from Entrenchment, they're cross-client compatible.

Some statistics...

Since August 2009 to February 2011 we have had over...

400,000 Unique visits to the website
12,000GB (12TB) of data transferred from our website

That equates to over 60,000 Unique downloads of the entire mod, excluding the excess of 20,000 Patches downloaded.

Thanks to everyone that has supported us this far and making our mod as popular as it is!

Not a problem lol, I'd rather you report it and there be nothing wrong than it not be reported and it be broken. The expensive Capital Ship Yards is a remnant from the original release(s) of the mod I will be lowering the price of it for all of the three factions it is a rather insane price at the moment.
LoL, yeah when I did my first game I was like Whoa!?!? Ive gotten accustom to it now, but glad to hear your droping the cost.

Here is another bug I found, not sure if its the mod or once again me. Ive played 2 games in a row and first cap I built was Dunov, and it wont broadside targets. It only attacks with its front facing weapons and makes no attempt to turn and bring its lasers to fire. LoL, now I dont mind it facing forward cuz it that much easier to fire the EMP. But I lose my main source of damage when I cant fire those lasers. Im going to play another quick match to see if it happens again. I will let you know one way or the other.

EDIT: So I made another 2 games just to be sure it was not just a fluke. Yeah my Dunovs dont broadside...they think they are Marzas.

Interesting I'll take a look in to that Dunov error, not entirely sure what would be causing it.

Patch #1 has now been released for "BETA A", re-balancing the costs of structures, allowing the TEC to build the Diablo again & including the Volumetric Explosions Mini-MOD.

Reporting a common minidump for the 1.12 Beta. I seem to be frequently getting minidumps when the game anounces that the pirate raiders are leaving. Its happend on several occasions now in several different situations. Just FYI. Great mod BTW. Cant wait for you to adapt it for entrenchment.

I'm having trouble installing it, tried following what it said. only i dont have that path. was wondering if it might be because i had to put another hard drive a few days ago to go along with my old hard drive and this is the only thing ive put on it yet? also their was no mod file, so i had to create one but i doubt thats what im supposed to do, or that it actually does anything.

Do you know where the rest of your SINS is located at? I would start there. Also the readme tells you where to stick them. Im not sure if you tried that yet.

on Jan 09, 2009

well my sins is located in my new hard drive. and yea i tried the readme, but i dont have that path, ive tried user for both my C: and E: drives. i just modified my old post too, there was no mod file in sins, are you supposd to create your own?

on Jan 09, 2009

wait. nvm ha. i just found it... dunno how i overlooked it before.

on Jan 09, 2009

works just fine now, took me a bit, but i got it, must just be mod retarded.

You kinda have to dig/search for it if you got vista. Im not sure for xp since I dont use it anymore. I found appdata by searching my computer. Then created a shortcut to it for easy access.

Just so you know, I get the "Pirate raiders are leaving their base" minidump also, it's doing it every time now in the current game i'm running, about 6 hrs into the game, every time restart and load it minidumps on the pirates.  I'm using the distant stars patch also.

Thank's for the report both of you, im looking in to this now and i hope to get a patch out to fix this tommorow and to also fix the "Dunov" bug where they keep thinking they are Marza's and firing at their targets head on.

Its the least I could do, after all your doing the hard work.

Many thanks for updating this excellent mod, Nacey. I now have officially run out of excuses for not updating to 1.12.

As for the pirate raider crashes: I noticed this too back from the 1.05 version. After poking around the files a bit, I noticed that Skyline had increased the cap on the number of pirate ships in raids to 350 supply in the gameplay.constants file. (Default raid supply limit is 230; the entry is maxSupply under pirateRaidDef, about 2/3s the way down the file.) Lowering this to 250 seemed to fix the problem for me, though I don't know if this applies to all situations as I haven't played on any map larger than 4-player.

I'm not sure if that fix will work in 1.12 since I don't know yet if the gameplay.constants file changed significantly, and I'm not sure what the upper bound for maxSupply would be without a long time of trial-and-error testing (I tried 300 once and it still crashed, if memory serves), but I can at least offer that as a starting point.

One other thing: Perhaps you could include gurkoz' excellent SINSounds mod with this? I for one tried it and preferred it greatly to Skyline's included sound effects mod.

Thank you again, and I look forward to more happy hours of Vasari blasting with Distant stars.

No you haven't.  7 Deadly Sins still isn't 1.12 compatible.

on Jan 10, 2009

so will this only work with 1.12 and 1.05?

not 1.11?

on Jan 10, 2009
