Screenshots:
We've setup a thread so you can all post your screenshots to share with us the Distant Stars team and its players. Im sure we're all intrigued to see what kinds of battles and events you've all been having on the mod aswell.

Some of you avid map makers out there have produced some great maps but never really had them recognised because they've got lost. Frequently Asked Questions

All files are compressed using 7Zip to shrink the download filesize. To extract these files you must use WinRAR or 7Zip.
Any Patches should overwrite the original install directory, either by extracting over the original folder, or cut/copy & pasting over the existing file/folder structure.

1) My game keeps crashing, is there anything I can do to stop it?
i) Are you running the game on maximum (highest) settings? if so, lower them to High or Medium, there is a known issue with the game using up too much memory, there is nothing we can do about this, also no matter how powerful your pc is, it is affected by this issue no matter the pc it is not above this crashing issue, it is a game problem not a hardware one, so quite simply lower your settings. If you still have an issue with crashing see point two.
ii) Give us as detailed information as possible about the crash, what was happening at the time of the crash, what races, ships, abilities were involved. If you can supply a Debug Log (see above for more information about logging) and post a bug report on our website.

2) The loading screens and portrait pictures dont appear properly, whats wrong?
i) This is an issue with ATI based graphics cards (rarely affects Nvidia based cards) we're looking in to the issue.

3) Why dont you support converting Distant Stars in to TXT format?
i) Quite simply many things can go wrong with converting your mod to TXT, we cant help you with something you've probably broken yourself.

4) Can I mod Distant Stars for myself?
i) Yes you can however please do not distribute our mod or our mod that you have edited to the public. You must ask for permission to do so, we will regrettably stop distributing our mod to all if users abuse our work.

5) Your mod is in BIN format I can't edit the files, what can I do?
i) You can convert the mod to TXT format however we wont offer any support to versions of the mod that have been converted to TXT.

6) Why is Distant Stars distributed in BIN format?
i) Mods load faster in BIN format and are less likely to have issues in this format.

7) I'm having trouble installing the MOD, do you have any more instructions?
i) Carbon was kind enough to do some more advanced instructions out here.

8) Is there any way to make new maps for Distant Stars using GalaxyForge?
i) Within the Distant Stars Extras folder there is a folder called Galaxy Forge, Copy and Paste this folder (or its contents) over your original Galaxy Forge folder (or its contents) replacing any files if it asks you to. When you start Galaxy Forge next you'll be able to use all of our planets.

Or, the DIY approach (without custom icons):

ii) The GalaxyForge supplied by the devs will still work with our Mod, however to be able to access all of our planetary bonuses, templates, planet types and stars you will need to take our GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (found in the GameInfo folder of the mod) and place it in to your GalaxyForge folder, overwriting the original GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (if you still wish to make maps for the original game keep a backup of the original file). This will allow you to use all of the Galaxy changes included in our mod.

Note: Any maps made for Distant Stars will not work with other Mods. See #8.2 for DIY instructions for map making or take the appropriate files from Entrenchment, they're cross-client compatible.

Some statistics...

Since August 2009 to February 2011 we have had over...

400,000 Unique visits to the website
12,000GB (12TB) of data transferred from our website

That equates to over 60,000 Unique downloads of the entire mod, excluding the excess of 20,000 Patches downloaded.

Thanks to everyone that has supported us this far and making our mod as popular as it is!

how do ews strike crafts compaire to bombers?

Have only messed with TEC but they can knock out the range of enemy vessels(by 40%). This includes SB allowing to use Orgevs very effectively.

on Apr 04, 2009

well the advent prevents regeneration, dunno how effective that is...

oh and did anyone else notice the new map called balanced resources looks exactly like the board of the game aggervation? (almost)

Well, I was only having trouble pounding at the Pirate Star Base using Vusari since they dont have long range bombardants like the Advent and Tec. And similarly, if I bring a SB constructor into the pirate base, it will surely be swarmed to death before I have a chance to deploy. So basicly I am just stating that requiring Vusuari Players to have overwhelming losses to take over a Pirate is a bit unbalanced. I tried to take over a Pirate base as Tec, and I was able to overwhlemed the entire base with a lvl 6 marza, Kol, sova, dunov, akkan in no time.

I am hoping really badly that a long-range would be weapon would be added to Vusari side to even things out a bit.

Use bombers, they should help handle the starbase. It does not have enough of the upgrades to make it that bad and a full developed Vasari bomber with maxed out phase missile research under this mod will ripe it apart.

Just had my ass handed to my by an attack by pirates. WOW!

Well, I did a decent amount of upgrade with the lvl 9 Vusari Cap fleet I put into action, granted I didnt bring along any other support beside the caps themselves. I dont like the concept of carrier Spamming. As I noticed how even the elite bombers fielded by the Carrier Caps get wiped pretty fast since the pirates are fielding Squadrons as well, so I would be outnumbered unless i can out-spam squadrons with them. I guess it would be better if I brought along some Squadron defense but since I commited so much towards the 5 cap ships. which is like 250 supplies commited, as I dont want to over extent my economy too much that is about as much as I could afford.

on Apr 04, 2009

Always bring support for caps. And bring 20 carriers is not spam. Its just good tactics. If you brought 300, yeah thats spam.

on Apr 04, 2009

I guess I would

A: hold off on attacking pirates till later during the game

B: Gamble with bigger fleets early on and try it.

Thanks for the strategies, I will try it when I feel like using the Vusari again.

Not only is the text in bold, but for some reason, it takes a bit longer to load the chat... weird.

As for the pirates, I'm liking the difficulty. I think teh moving starbase is more of a challenge combined with the fact that they are pirates, they would steal from anyone. After all, I don't see a cap or frigate factory there.

I also like that the pirates are in big enough force to make me think, "Okay, am I willing to deal with the extra front to defend or can I knock them out without heavy loses?" It adds a challenge, especially since the pirate base has little to no value. In Death from Above, the pirate base had a trait called 'Black Market' which gave you 200% bonus to trade income and it had 4 logistic slots. So you can make cash off of it and the pirates were much easier. Here, attacking the pirates just makes sure you don't have to keep fighting.

So, I'm pretty happy. And I use EWS Bombers, but only a couple of wings to auto-cast. They don't do much damage.

on Apr 05, 2009

Ews bombers are not meant to be spammed. They just are not effective enough in this regard. Flip side two to three squads will tip the balance in your favor immensely.

As for the Pirates, I now find them harder to deal with than the AI. Though as long as you have a well developed line of defense they can be contained.

on Apr 05, 2009

Well I found one wierd thing.

When i was TEC, every time i tried to capture an ice planet. It always CTD'd without warning or minidump. Wierd.

on Apr 05, 2009

guess who is friend and guess who is foe in this mass of ships

on Apr 05, 2009

Btw, don't bother making any changes to the skybox. Although I'm still not big on the bright yellow, I'm playing big ass games now and have switched off the skyboxes for performance.

Hope you didn't change it before heading off for your b-day. And hope you had fun.
