Multiplayer Games:
We've setup a thread for everyone to organise their multiplayer games in and also setup example times and dates for most people to meet up and start games. These are what we hope to be the main times for people to be around and want to play games together.

The times are:
4pm EST (9pm GMT) Saturdays & Sundays
9pm EST (2am GMT)
Saturdays & Sundays

If you want to organise other games please go ahead using the same topic to consolidate all the information in one place and hopefully get more games together within our community. These games are for PvP, PvAI & PvPvAIso come along and we'll get some games going!

Screenshots:
We've setup a thread so you can all post your screenshots to share with us the Distant Stars team and its players. Im sure we're all intrigued to see what kinds of battles and events you've all been having on the mod aswell.

Lore:
We know some of you guys love to role play whilst using Distant Stars, and here's a topic for you guys to post all of your role playing stories, character profiles and anything else you can imagine.

Maps:
Some of you avid map makers out there have produced some great maps but never really had them recognised because they've got lost. Well here's a topic for you to post a link to the download (we can even provide mirrors if necessary) a screenshot or two of the map for us all the preview and if enough people like it we'll even include the map in with the actual mod!

Please visit our website and for more information, change logs, downloads, and to report bugs. Our website can be found here: http://distantstars.mmobase.com

http://distantstars.mmobase.com/?m=reportabug

Please include as much information as possible, if you have an error log feel free to post it on these forums and we'll take it from there. If you can reproduce the error please include the error log (read below to find out how to enable error logs) and include as much detail on how to reproduce the problem.

Open the user.setting file (using Notepad, Wordpad or any text editor) and scroll down to the bottom 7 lines from the bottom is the line:
LogOutput FALSE
Change FALSE to TRUE
LogOutput TRUE

and from then on any Log files will be saved to the debug folder:
Windows Vista/Windows 7:
C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Windows Username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Debug
or
Windows XP:
C:\Documents and settings\<Your Windows Username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Debug

If you get these log files to us (you can just paste them in to a forum post) we can hopefully get your issues sorted.

Frequently Asked Questions

All files are compressed using 7Zip to shrink the download filesize. To extract these files you must use WinRAR or 7Zip.
Any Patches should overwrite the original install directory, either by extracting over the original folder, or cut/copy & pasting over the existing file/folder structure.

1) My game keeps crashing, is there anything I can do to stop it?
i) Are you running the game on maximum (highest) settings? if so, lower them to High or Medium, there is a known issue with the game using up too much memory, there is nothing we can do about this, also no matter how powerful your pc is, it is affected by this issue no matter the pc it is not above this crashing issue, it is a game problem not a hardware one, so quite simply lower your settings. If you still have an issue with crashing see point two.
ii) Give us as detailed information as possible about the crash, what was happening at the time of the crash, what races, ships, abilities were involved. If you can supply a Debug Log (see above for more information about logging) and post a bug report on our website.

2) The loading screens and portrait pictures dont appear properly, whats wrong?
i) This is an issue with ATI based graphics cards (rarely affects Nvidia based cards) we're looking in to the issue.

3) Why dont you support converting Distant Stars in to TXT format?
i) Quite simply many things can go wrong with converting your mod to TXT, we cant help you with something you've probably broken yourself.

4) Can I mod Distant Stars for myself?
i) Yes you can however please do not distribute our mod or our mod that you have edited to the public. You must ask for permission to do so, we will regrettably stop distributing our mod to all if users abuse our work.

5) Your mod is in BIN format I can't edit the files, what can I do?
i) You can convert the mod to TXT format however we wont offer any support to versions of the mod that have been converted to TXT.

6) Why is Distant Stars distributed in BIN format?
i) Mods load faster in BIN format and are less likely to have issues in this format.

7) I'm having trouble installing the MOD, do you have any more instructions?
i) Carbon was kind enough to do some more advanced instructions out here.

8) Is there any way to make new maps for Distant Stars using GalaxyForge?
i) Within the Distant Stars Extras folder there is a folder called Galaxy Forge, Copy and Paste this folder (or its contents) over your original Galaxy Forge folder (or its contents) replacing any files if it asks you to. When you start Galaxy Forge next you'll be able to use all of our planets.

Or, the DIY approach (without custom icons):

ii) The GalaxyForge supplied by the devs will still work with our Mod, however to be able to access all of our planetary bonuses, templates, planet types and stars you will need to take our GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (found in the GameInfo folder of the mod) and place it in to your GalaxyForge folder, overwriting the original GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (if you still wish to make maps for the original game keep a backup of the original file). This will allow you to use all of the Galaxy changes included in our mod.

Note: Any maps made for Distant Stars will not work with other Mods. See #8.2 for DIY instructions for map making or take the appropriate files from Entrenchment, they're cross-client compatible.

Some statistics...

Since August 2009 to February 2011 we have had over...

400,000 Unique visits to the website
12,000GB (12TB) of data transferred from our website

That equates to over 60,000 Unique downloads of the entire mod, excluding the excess of 20,000 Patches downloaded.

Thanks to everyone that has supported us this far and making our mod as popular as it is!

Hello all fellow Distant Stars People.
(okay a bit lame but oh well)

I would like to introduce the Flagship Mini-Mod. Currently in Beta form so please feel free to make suggestions/critiques. I am currently trying to figure out a way for it to be researched and while only allowing you to have one but allowing you to rebuild it if destroyed. Currently you begin with it and if you lose it, sorry. Other things like HUD icons and such may be changed as I figure that out, or outsource it.

http://www.mediafire.com/file/19nuwmn9vkp4bk0/Flagship.zip

Just stack it on top and you should get the checksum number 148910550.

Enjoy!

Anywho back to bug hunting for me

If you didn't already know...  Might wanna take the meshes from the official diplomacy release for the original planets and use those instead of the DS ones, especially considering you're going with the original textures.  That fixes the polar shift issue people are having...  Or you can revert to older DS textures that match the meshes included.  Whichever is easier.  If enough people let me know that they want those now, I'll post how to get them.

Sadly the whole weekend went by and that's all I had time to figure out...  Bleh.

Phoenix class...  Really...

Yes Really

I have always liked the myth of the Phoenix bird. It goes way beyond star trek/star wars and/or the city I live near.

on Mar 21, 2011

OK, I loaded it up, played for an hour and I'm sold.

Simply, WOW!  First thing to see is the amazing explosions and weapon trails, then the variety of planets.  I'm amazed at how good it looks/sounds!

It's almost a new game with the new techs and prices, etc.

I read through the change log here, and went to the DS site, but is there a page/doc with an explanation of the tech changes, as well as all the other changes for the DS mod?

Also, is there a list of preferred maps (DS comes with a few, but there must be more out there)?  I read the thread about the DS maps, but most of the posts are over a year old.  Which ones are best/recommended for dl?

Well done!

Well, like I said, there's the DS wiki http://sinsdistantstars.wikia.com/wiki/SoaSE_Distant_Stars_Wiki    That highlights the differences between the original version and this mod.  It's only as up to date as Diplo 0.7 since 0.99 is new and I haven't had the time to go over everything...  The place also looks like crap since the wiki people went and changed things on their end which messed up most of the work I did, which will be fixed up and made to look all pretty again once I have the time to do it.

As for the maps, there's really none that are preferred over any others, online play is usually done with a couple maps that were included in the original or randomly generated maps.  If you're a fan of reading, check out the DS lore and grab all of the maps associated with that so you can have fun in our systems.  The maps are about a year old because that's when the last DS update was made and we've all been just hanging onto our ideas until the mod reaches it's final build and we don't have to change things once they're published.

Forgive my skepticism, but I don't believe you.  ;]

I know, the wiki people are really pushy, I still don't like the new look they forced upon everyone. I can help you guys out with your wiki if you want, I am an admin on the StarCraft Wiki and the admin cleaning up the Sins Wiki, I have already fixed a few of your spelling mistakes. Thanks to your wiki, I was able to add the missing research trees to the Sins Wiki.

I am also quite fond of the Phoenix, along with the Dragon, hence my Dragoenix Order name on ICO. I have always liked Zefram Cochrane's Phoenix from First Contact and the Alliance Starbird emblem of the Rebel Alliance. It really does go way beyond that though.

Sorry for the lame question, but what are the little triangles (look like teeth) on the planets in DS  (when viewing the entire solar system)?

on Mar 21, 2011

If you want to work on the DS Wiki, knock yourself out.

????

The yellow triangles you see on the sides are there to give you quick reference as to which planets are the current home planets.  The yellow triangles under the planet are there to give you quick reference that there is a special artifact on that planet.  The blue ticks you see (that aren't always blue) on the home planets are there to give you quick references to the size of the planet since most of the planets have 4 sizes, a couple only have two, and a few have 5.

on Mar 21, 2011

Yes Thanks!

I knew about the yellow triangles, but the blue triangles at the 4 o'clock position were the ones I was asking about.  Very interesting addition.

I really like the additions to Sins in the DS mod.

I'm not too sure about the gas giants with 10 crystal/metal asteroids though.  Seems like it overshadows the other planets, since it has the resource options of 3 total planets.

on Mar 21, 2011

The Gas Giants are Stants baby.

And speaking of babies I am already going to have to put up a patch. Forgot to put in some finish conditions for a few abilities. On the flipside, the OPness of the flagships isn't as bad as I feared. Would have lost my flagship if the Advent fleet didn't suddenly change targets. But it was close (about 100 hp left ).

on Mar 21, 2011
The gas giants I believe really do play well. Gas Giants tend to have the most orbiting bodies in a planetary system (other than the belts) so it makes sense. Most hard sci-fi settings have battles, refueling stations or mining operations in and or around gas giants. A few of the popular series (not neccesarily all hard sci-fi) such as Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica, Crusade, Cowboy Bebop, Wing Commander, etc ... mention things like this. There are, I am sure, better lists but this is just what I could come up with off the top of my head.
on Mar 21, 2011

Ryat, I noticed a bug with the Flagships mini-mod.  The Advent's Flagship's Beam Fragmenter ability has zero duration for the second level, and likely the third one as well.

on Mar 21, 2011

lol, thx SpardaSon21

The joys of beta work.

I have noticed a glitch in the newest Diplomacy mod, and it just annoys the hell outta me. When you zoom out to the galaxy view, the planet icons are glitched. They're almost always the wrong planet and it looks like there's two planets on top of each other. It actually makes me want to play regular Diplomacy. I love Distant Stars, but this makes it hard to overlook my empire and just generally hard to play. I downloaded the patch and reinstalled the mod, but still the same issues. Help would be appreciated.
