We've setup a thread for everyone to organise their multiplayer games in and also setup example times and dates for most people to meet up and start games. These are what we hope to be the main times for people to be around and want to play games together.

The times are:
4pm EST (9pm GMT) Saturdays & Sundays
9pm EST (2am GMT)
Saturdays & Sundays

If you want to organise other games please go ahead using the same topic to consolidate all the information in one place and hopefully get more games together within our community. These games are for PvP, PvAI & PvPvAIso come along and we'll get some games going!

Screenshots:
We've setup a thread so you can all post your screenshots to share with us the Distant Stars team and its players. Im sure we're all intrigued to see what kinds of battles and events you've all been having on the mod aswell.

Lore:
We know some of you guys love to role play whilst using Distant Stars, and here's a topic for you guys to post all of your role playing stories, character profiles and anything else you can imagine.

Maps:
Some of you avid map makers out there have produced some great maps but never really had them recognised because they've got lost. Well here's a topic for you to post a link to the download (we can even provide mirrors if necessary) a screenshot or two of the map for us all the preview and if enough people like it we'll even include the map in with the actual mod!

Please visit our website and for more information, change logs, downloads, and to report bugs. Our website can be found here: http://distantstars.mmobase.com

http://distantstars.mmobase.com/?m=reportabug

Please include as much information as possible, if you have an error log feel free to post it on these forums and we'll take it from there. If you can reproduce the error please include the error log (read below to find out how to enable error logs) and include as much detail on how to reproduce the problem.

To enable logging:

or
Windows XP:
C:\Documents and settings\<Your Windows Username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Setting

Open the user.setting file (using Notepad, Wordpad or any text editor) and scroll down to the bottom 7 lines from the bottom is the line:
LogOutput FALSE
Change FALSE to TRUE
LogOutput TRUE

and from then on any Log files will be saved to the debug folder:
Windows Vista/Windows 7:
C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Windows Username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Debug
or
Windows XP:
C:\Documents and settings\<Your Windows Username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Debug

If you get these log files to us (you can just paste them in to a forum post) we can hopefully get your issues sorted.

Frequently Asked Questions

All files are compressed using 7Zip to shrink the download filesize. To extract these files you must use WinRAR or 7Zip.
Any Patches should overwrite the original install directory, either by extracting over the original folder, or cut/copy & pasting over the existing file/folder structure.

1) My game keeps crashing, is there anything I can do to stop it?
i) Are you running the game on maximum (highest) settings? if so, lower them to High or Medium, there is a known issue with the game using up too much memory, there is nothing we can do about this, also no matter how powerful your pc is, it is affected by this issue no matter the pc it is not above this crashing issue, it is a game problem not a hardware one, so quite simply lower your settings. If you still have an issue with crashing see point two.
ii) Give us as detailed information as possible about the crash, what was happening at the time of the crash, what races, ships, abilities were involved. If you can supply a Debug Log (see above for more information about logging) and post a bug report on our website.

2) The loading screens and portrait pictures dont appear properly, whats wrong?
i) This is an issue with ATI based graphics cards (rarely affects Nvidia based cards) we're looking in to the issue.

3) Why dont you support converting Distant Stars in to TXT format?
i) Quite simply many things can go wrong with converting your mod to TXT, we cant help you with something you've probably broken yourself.

4) Can I mod Distant Stars for myself?
i) Yes you can however please do not distribute our mod or our mod that you have edited to the public. You must ask for permission to do so, we will regrettably stop distributing our mod to all if users abuse our work.

5) Your mod is in BIN format I can't edit the files, what can I do?
i) You can convert the mod to TXT format however we wont offer any support to versions of the mod that have been converted to TXT.

6) Why is Distant Stars distributed in BIN format?
i) Mods load faster in BIN format and are less likely to have issues in this format.

7) I'm having trouble installing the MOD, do you have any more instructions?
i) Carbon was kind enough to do some more advanced instructions out here.

8) Is there any way to make new maps for Distant Stars using GalaxyForge?
i) Within the Distant Stars Extras folder there is a folder called Galaxy Forge, Copy and Paste this folder (or its contents) over your original Galaxy Forge folder (or its contents) replacing any files if it asks you to. When you start Galaxy Forge next you'll be able to use all of our planets.

Or, the DIY approach (without custom icons):

ii) The GalaxyForge supplied by the devs will still work with our Mod, however to be able to access all of our planetary bonuses, templates, planet types and stars you will need to take our GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (found in the GameInfo folder of the mod) and place it in to your GalaxyForge folder, overwriting the original GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (if you still wish to make maps for the original game keep a backup of the original file). This will allow you to use all of the Galaxy changes included in our mod.

Note: Any maps made for Distant Stars will not work with other Mods. See #8.2 for DIY instructions for map making or take the appropriate files from Entrenchment, they're cross-client compatible.

Some statistics...

Since August 2009 to February 2011 we have had over...

400,000 Unique visits to the website
12,000GB (12TB) of data transferred from our website

That equates to over 60,000 Unique downloads of the entire mod, excluding the excess of 20,000 Patches downloaded.

Thanks to everyone that has supported us this far and making our mod as popular as it is!

Using the MSGM mod stacked on top of DS?

Ugh let me double check the download link to make sure it's not referencing the wrong copy. [e digicons]:'([/e]

on Mar 26, 2011

Yes, but I also had the patch enabled. Disabled the patch, but the next time I started a game, the same display issues happened:

And, I hadn't had this next problem before:

No minidump this time, but still very strange.

Note that this wasn't happening until I downloaded the newest DS file for v1.2 of Diplomacy, and I never had the MSG mod before.

on Mar 26, 2011

Cat I re-uploaded and relinked the MSGM - v0.3 DS Compliant mod incase it was a corupt files of some sort. It should be 873.11kb when downloaded before being unzipped.

Here is the direct link if you are having troubles with the thread of some sort.

http://www.mediafire.com/?c31g4muiyl3un51

Do you have the latest DS update that is current for v1.2? You should check the OP for the most current version as the team has a stable build for v1.2 currently.

When unpacked the newest DS mod should be in a folder titled 'Distant Stars (D) 0.99 B2'.

Other than that I don't really know what to tell you bud. The MSGM mod looks good from my end and I've triple checked the version that is uploaded all without any issues and I haven't had any issues with my install of Distant Stars or with both of them enabled.

on Mar 26, 2011

Ok, I'll reinstall DS and MSGM and see if it clears up.

on Mar 26, 2011

What the hell. I don't have any of those issues. May I suggest a complete reinstall from the ground up, Sins, the mod, the whole nine yards. Plus check your video card drivers.

on Mar 26, 2011

If it helps I would suggest trying a full download instead of just patching.

Make sure you are using 0.99 B2 (Beta Two) Release.

Agreed. You may be having conflicts as there were some major graphical changes between B1 and B2.

on Mar 26, 2011

I had the planet polar slide issue (what we've been referring to that second picture as) in both the B1 and B2 versions.  The B1 only needed the older unoptomized textures to be reinstalled which I posted for everyone and the B2 was missing a few meshes I believe.  I want to say the planet_(inset type)_0 meshes for the originals.  I forget what it was now, but I do know that making sure you have the textures I posted for B1 and verifying that you have all 4 meshes for each original planet and adding in the ones you don't have sure as hell fixes the issue because I don't have it on my end any more.

By the way, this may only affect the patched up versions since I've not bothered getting the full version for any of the recent updates.

Still haven't run into the first picture yet, though when I was screwing around with the colors.color file I added in an extra line by mistake and it made all of the phase lanes disappear.  There's no reason why I'm telling anyone this outside of it being potentially useful information at some point in the future.

on Mar 26, 2011

This is what I was seeing a lot:

Notice that the window on the right says 'Ice Planet." Ice planet? It sure doesn't look like one...it's like a double terran or something. How is it possible I'm the only person with this problem? You guys haven't seen it before?

Ok, just reinstalled everything - vanilla Sins, Diplo. and Entrench. Redownloading DS and MSGM now...I pray this works, because I love this mod but these damn problems make it impossible to tell what planet is what from above.

on Mar 26, 2011

Same shit guys. Just reinstalled everything 3 times, and I got about 6 minidumps when I:

Opened the mod menu in the game and tried to disable MSGM (2)

Changed the game settings (1)

Just play on a small map (3)

Same graphical errors shown above this post. Same "polar side issue". Same shit.

I don't know if I'm even gonna use this mod until you guys release a new version when the next Diplomacy patch comes out or something...It's frustrating.

on Mar 26, 2011

I seem to be getting a mini-dump evry time I try to enable the "Dynamic Combat" mini-mod that is included with the 0.99B2 release.  I've posted the dump file in my drop box . . . hopefully it' just me doing something wrong!

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8042126/Sins-Diplomacy%20v1.2-2011-03-26-08-38-09-5856-4772.dmp

I was doing it wrong, copying the contents of the Dynamic mod into the DS folder proper got everything working, not just running the mini-mod by itself.

We are doing what we can. I am sorry for the frustration. Its a bit frustrating for us as well. We want people to enjoy our work.

Yeah, that is one way to get it working.

The other is to make sure the the mini-mod is on top/above the DS mod as well so you get the same effect.

on Mar 26, 2011

If you have an error in the Main DS download, all of these little fixes we're trying to give you aren't going to do anything to help you because as I stated before in a previous post, something as simple as an error in the colors.color file can have detrimental effects on the game itself, and trying to figure out why your copy is broken just plain isn't worth the effort to any of us.

Try downloading it from this alternate link, maybe the upload is corrupt: http://www.moddb.com/downloads/start/31340

  1. Redownload DS 0.99B2 That's where your problem is.  Your copy of DS is corrupt.
  2. Delete everything that is in the mod folder (Do not overwrite, start fresh)
  3. Unzip/unrar the archive to your desktop
  4. Copy/cut and paste the mod into the Diplomacy 1.2 mod folder
  5. Start the game up and enable the mod.
  6. Verify the game is running and it's checksum is 73571136.  (Pressing control+shift+tab will put the game in windowed mode if you don't play that way.  Makes it easier to compare the checksum when you can see both numbers at the same time.)
  7. Apply the mod and wait for the screen to change.
  8. I can absolutely confirm at this time since I'm doing these steps myself as I type this, that if you get a good download, YOU WILL NOT HAVE ANY GRAPHICAL ISSUES.
  9. Play the game for a couple minutes send your scouts out into the universe and you will see that I am correct.
  10. Quit the game.
  11. Redownload Boshimi's mod if you don't still have a copy of it.
  12. Add his mod (MSGM - v0.3 DS Compliant) to the mod folder.
  13. Run your game and enable Boshimi's mod.  Select his mod on the right side and click MOVE MOD UP so that the order of mods is MSGM followed by DS.
  14. Verify the checksum is 147142272.  Click APPLY CHANGES if it is, if it is not, then you need a new copy of MSGM.
  15. I can absolutely confirm at this time that everything WILL WORK AS ADVERTISED WITHOUT ANY GRAPHICAL ERRORS.
  16. Enjoy the game.

The only time anyone has been experiencing graphical errors, myself included, is due to patching which doesn't always give you all of the necessary files, rather then getting the full download.  So always get the full download whenever possible.
