If you want to organise other games please go ahead using the same topic to consolidate all the information in one place and hopefully get more games together within our community. These games are for PvP, PvAI & PvPvAIso come along and we'll get some games going!

Screenshots:
We've setup a thread so you can all post your screenshots to share with us the Distant Stars team and its players. Im sure we're all intrigued to see what kinds of battles and events you've all been having on the mod aswell.

Some of you avid map makers out there have produced some great maps but never really had them recognised because they've got lost. Frequently Asked Questions

All files are compressed using 7Zip to shrink the download filesize. To extract these files you must use WinRAR or 7Zip.
Any Patches should overwrite the original install directory, either by extracting over the original folder, or cut/copy & pasting over the existing file/folder structure.

1) My game keeps crashing, is there anything I can do to stop it?
i) Are you running the game on maximum (highest) settings? if so, lower them to High or Medium, there is a known issue with the game using up too much memory, there is nothing we can do about this, also no matter how powerful your pc is, it is affected by this issue no matter the pc it is not above this crashing issue, it is a game problem not a hardware one, so quite simply lower your settings. If you still have an issue with crashing see point two.
ii) Give us as detailed information as possible about the crash, what was happening at the time of the crash, what races, ships, abilities were involved. If you can supply a Debug Log (see above for more information about logging) and post a bug report on our website.

2) The loading screens and portrait pictures dont appear properly, whats wrong?
i) This is an issue with ATI based graphics cards (rarely affects Nvidia based cards) we're looking in to the issue.

3) Why dont you support converting Distant Stars in to TXT format?
i) Quite simply many things can go wrong with converting your mod to TXT, we cant help you with something you've probably broken yourself.

4) Can I mod Distant Stars for myself?
i) Yes you can however please do not distribute our mod or our mod that you have edited to the public. You must ask for permission to do so, we will regrettably stop distributing our mod to all if users abuse our work.

5) Your mod is in BIN format I can't edit the files, what can I do?
i) You can convert the mod to TXT format however we wont offer any support to versions of the mod that have been converted to TXT.

6) Why is Distant Stars distributed in BIN format?
i) Mods load faster in BIN format and are less likely to have issues in this format.

7) I'm having trouble installing the MOD, do you have any more instructions?
i) Carbon was kind enough to do some more advanced instructions out here.

8) Is there any way to make new maps for Distant Stars using GalaxyForge?
i) Within the Distant Stars Extras folder there is a folder called Galaxy Forge, Copy and Paste this folder (or its contents) over your original Galaxy Forge folder (or its contents) replacing any files if it asks you to. When you start Galaxy Forge next you'll be able to use all of our planets.

Or, the DIY approach (without custom icons):

ii) The GalaxyForge supplied by the devs will still work with our Mod, however to be able to access all of our planetary bonuses, templates, planet types and stars you will need to take our GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (found in the GameInfo folder of the mod) and place it in to your GalaxyForge folder, overwriting the original GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (if you still wish to make maps for the original game keep a backup of the original file). This will allow you to use all of the Galaxy changes included in our mod.

Note: Any maps made for Distant Stars will not work with other Mods. See #8.2 for DIY instructions for map making or take the appropriate files from Entrenchment, they're cross-client compatible.

Some statistics...

Since August 2009 to February 2011 we have had over...

400,000 Unique visits to the website
12,000GB (12TB) of data transferred from our website

That equates to over 60,000 Unique downloads of the entire mod, excluding the excess of 20,000 Patches downloaded.

Thanks to everyone that has supported us this far and making our mod as popular as it is!

Hmmm ... I don't suppose a slogan could be accomplished?

on Apr 23, 2011

blobness
staples and rules of Sci-Fi

I've always felt uneasy about this idea. Not to say certain things don't make more sense than others, but since aliens are very much the unknown, there is no real idea as to how any scenario would play out. As for what combat and such would like, it depends on the tech, which one should play 'loose and easy' with as it allows exploration which then allows for people to pursue it and, sometimes, make it become reality.

As for the name, I figured he would name it something out of his Lore. I dunno if Ryat had the flagship idea before it was introduced into the lore, but it certainly came in early and the very same man is helping make it a reality. Might as well give him his pick.

Sweet. I got Karma.

I should probably rephrase that as "Hard" Sci-Fi, Draakjacht.  It sounds pompous either way, I know, and thats not how I intend it, but authors like Peter Watts were how I were introduced to Science Fiction at large, so they're always what I hold my standards to.

As for names, if we're not going to just throw random syllables together ala Vasari language, why not go for something more Kingly? This vessel is meant to be the flagship and most powerful vessel of the Vasari fleet, yes? Assuming SivCorp is open to suggestion on this of course. Hellion makes a great, imposing name, but it suits a fast raider more than a massive tank-like battleship. At the risk of sounding derivative, something like Sovereign, or Overlord might fit better.

Of course, SivCorp should name it whatever the hell he wants , seeing as how he made the thing.

on Apr 23, 2011

Yeah, we pretty much agree on that last point. And I can see your suggestions. I would prefer something less fitting for a proper name, but still cool, like Subjugation. Kinda makes them look a little less literate.

As for 'Hard' sci-fi, I get what you mean. That's the funny thing about sci-fi, it can take on so many focuses. Some focus on a genuine attempts at xenobiology. Some aim for accurate depictions of technology. Some go for philosophical treatments of the human condition. And some are just to watch things blow up. And again, the rules can be so varying based on when and where they happen. As long as you try to keep yourself to a fair standard, it's all good. Just keep yourself open to anything with potential.

I am open to different naming conventions for the ship.

As far as Lore goes.... The ship is a "Homeship"  The Homeships are the capital cities of the Vasari tribes.  The Sivtherium Tribe is a Research and Development Tribe.  Their Homeship relies on Nanite tech and abilites more than firepower.

The actual name of the ship is the Soner Khal'd.  I've simply classified them as Hellion ships from a Tec/Advent point of view.  The hell is the swarms of Nanites that will make you wish you would die quickly...

If anyone can come up with a good class name for that impending doom emotion, I'm up for it.

on Apr 23, 2011

SivCorp
Soner Khal'd

That sounds Vasari and cool

on Apr 23, 2011

The actual name of the ship is the Soner Khal'd. I've simply classified them as Hellion ships from a Tec/Advent point of view.

This makes sense personally. Look at all the other classifications: Assailant, Subvertor, Devastator, Evacuator, Desolator, etc...

on Apr 23, 2011

I'm amused by the potential write up I can do on the DS wiki for it.  Soner Khal'd Hellion - Vasari capital ship capable of making you wish you had died more quickly.

on Apr 23, 2011

Yeah, I'm digging Soner Kahl'd as the Vasari designation. As for reporting names, hmmm.......

Well, theres the ever present Hellion, which is certainly a good name, but I personally feel it just isn't grand enough for a ship like this. Then there's Leader names, like Sovereign, Overlord, Hegemon, so on. Those are kinda derivative though.

Then we have Draakjacht's 'concept' naming, such as Subjugation, which is really good, and seems like something the Vasari would approve of. Other names along that line could be things like Enslaver, Overwatch, Champion, things like that. All good for Vasari ships.

Finally, something I've been thinking ... this thing seems like its supposed to be Utterly Massive right? How about Monolith/Monolithic? Big, imposing, unknowable. Fits a ship like this perfectly, from the eyes of the other races.

on Apr 23, 2011

Name it... Suzerain

on Apr 23, 2011

I shall call it......

Mini-me.

Could post the video that would have made it funnier.

on Apr 24, 2011

Why not have Soner Kahl'd as one of the in game names, give it it's own selection in the files so it always only picks that name(or 4-8 variations for multi-vasari purposes) and have the Hellion be it's classification?

EX:

Soner Kahl'd

Hellion class Homeship

Description: SivCorps doom craft to oversee his conquest of the cosmos(evil arm chair comes with built in massage function, hot and cold drink holder and exclusive controls over ship's super weapons)

on Apr 24, 2011

I think that was the idea, BadTune. We're just running through the various possibilities for class names.

I also fully support installation of the Evil Arm Chair (tm).

on Apr 24, 2011

So long as the Evil Arm Chair has an apple juice tap

(ya got to read the lore to get it)

on Apr 24, 2011

Apple Juice on me!

Okay, so you could go Subjugation Class or Subjugator Class. Suppressor Class, Conqueror Class are other okay ideas. Monolith isn't bad, but you could up it to Megalith Class or Colossus Class, the first being my preference. I briefly thought of Vindicator Class, but that would be better for the Advent flagship.
