Multiplayer Games:
We've setup a thread for everyone to organise their multiplayer games in and also setup example times and dates for most people to meet up and start games. These are what we hope to be the main times for people to be around and want to play games together.

The times are:
4pm EST (9pm GMT) Saturdays & Sundays
9pm EST (2am GMT)
Saturdays & Sundays

If you want to organise other games please go ahead using the same topic to consolidate all the information in one place and hopefully get more games together within our community. These games are for PvP, PvAI & PvPvAIso come along and we'll get some games going!

Screenshots:
We've setup a thread so you can all post your screenshots to share with us the Distant Stars team and its players. Im sure we're all intrigued to see what kinds of battles and events you've all been having on the mod aswell.

Lore:
We know some of you guys love to role play whilst using Distant Stars, and here's a topic for you guys to post all of your role playing stories, character profiles and anything else you can imagine.

Maps:
Some of you avid map makers out there have produced some great maps but never really had them recognised because they've got lost. Well here's a topic for you to post a link to the download (we can even provide mirrors if necessary) a screenshot or two of the map for us all the preview and if enough people like it we'll even include the map in with the actual mod!

Please visit our website and for more information, change logs, downloads, and to report bugs. Our website can be found here: http://distantstars.mmobase.com

Open the user.setting file (using Notepad, Wordpad or any text editor) and scroll down to the bottom 7 lines from the bottom is the line:
LogOutput FALSE
Change FALSE to TRUE

If you get these log files to us (you can just paste them in to a forum post) we can hopefully get your issues sorted.

Frequently Asked Questions

All files are compressed using 7Zip to shrink the download filesize. To extract these files you must use WinRAR or 7Zip.
Any Patches should overwrite the original install directory, either by extracting over the original folder, or cut/copy & pasting over the existing file/folder structure.

1) My game keeps crashing, is there anything I can do to stop it?
i) Are you running the game on maximum (highest) settings? if so, lower them to High or Medium, there is a known issue with the game using up too much memory, there is nothing we can do about this, also no matter how powerful your pc is, it is affected by this issue no matter the pc it is not above this crashing issue, it is a game problem not a hardware one, so quite simply lower your settings. If you still have an issue with crashing see point two.
ii) Give us as detailed information as possible about the crash, what was happening at the time of the crash, what races, ships, abilities were involved. If you can supply a Debug Log (see above for more information about logging) and post a bug report on our website.

2) The loading screens and portrait pictures dont appear properly, whats wrong?
i) This is an issue with ATI based graphics cards (rarely affects Nvidia based cards) we're looking in to the issue.

3) Why dont you support converting Distant Stars in to TXT format?
i) Quite simply many things can go wrong with converting your mod to TXT, we cant help you with something you've probably broken yourself.

4) Can I mod Distant Stars for myself?
i) Yes you can however please do not distribute our mod or our mod that you have edited to the public. You must ask for permission to do so, we will regrettably stop distributing our mod to all if users abuse our work.

5) Your mod is in BIN format I can't edit the files, what can I do?
i) You can convert the mod to TXT format however we wont offer any support to versions of the mod that have been converted to TXT.

6) Why is Distant Stars distributed in BIN format?
i) Mods load faster in BIN format and are less likely to have issues in this format.

7) I'm having trouble installing the MOD, do you have any more instructions?
i) Carbon was kind enough to do some more advanced instructions out here.

8) Is there any way to make new maps for Distant Stars using GalaxyForge?
i) Within the Distant Stars Extras folder there is a folder called Galaxy Forge, Copy and Paste this folder (or its contents) over your original Galaxy Forge folder (or its contents) replacing any files if it asks you to. When you start Galaxy Forge next you'll be able to use all of our planets.

Or, the DIY approach (without custom icons):

ii) The GalaxyForge supplied by the devs will still work with our Mod, however to be able to access all of our planetary bonuses, templates, planet types and stars you will need to take our GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (found in the GameInfo folder of the mod) and place it in to your GalaxyForge folder, overwriting the original GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (if you still wish to make maps for the original game keep a backup of the original file). This will allow you to use all of the Galaxy changes included in our mod.

Note: Any maps made for Distant Stars will not work with other Mods. See #8.2 for DIY instructions for map making or take the appropriate files from Entrenchment, they're cross-client compatible.

Some statistics...

Since August 2009 to February 2011 we have had over...

400,000 Unique visits to the website
12,000GB (12TB) of data transferred from our website

That equates to over 60,000 Unique downloads of the entire mod, excluding the excess of 20,000 Patches downloaded.

Thanks to everyone that has supported us this far and making our mod as popular as it is!

Hey guys,

So I realize this is probably off topic, and not of great concern, but its been bugging the crap out of me, so I thought I'd just ask.

I'm trying to think of the name of the actor for one of the Player Portraits, I can't think of it to save my life and its driving me mad. Its the one on the left, his head is tilted towards our right, but he's looking at us (i'm partly color blind, but the frame looks to be tinted purple a little bit). The other two pics in the trio are, the middle guy has glowing eyes and a blue bandana over his face, the last one looks like some sort of bug for a head.

Anyways, I'm pretty sure the dude was in a sci-fi I just can't remember at the moment. Thanks in advance!

Are you thinking of Kurt Russell from Stargate? I also had him as Snake Pliskin as a variant of the pirates, but t rarely shows up.

Quoting Leuthesius, reply 7010Sixth time was the charm, but something is wrong--where's that awesome music? It's playing standard Sins music at the splash.

See this post and download the efficiency pack.  https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/335474/page/271/#3055017  It has fixes for the mod, includes the mini mods, as well as has the galaxy forge icons...  And has the other more awesome music.

Apologies for the newbie-question - but does that addon-pack work with the normal 1.00 file? I tried combining them and got some 37... something checksum that I can't remember now. It always kept crashing as I applied the changes after finishing the order-list of the mods. I was following the readme instructions too!

Sincerely

I think you want to use the efficiency version with the add-ons. It's pretty stable with me, but I haven't tested the add-ons with the normal 1.0.

No not Kurt Russel. The other guy. lol.

Was curious if I could use a couple things from your mod. Mainly the little things like planet/star models, skyboxes ect..

Would probably only be for personal use but If I can actually manage to make a mod, I may release it in the future. Though that will take some time if I actually go through with it.

Edit: Skyboxes added, and to the post below me, will do. Thanks

The planet and star models that are used in DS come from the core game, Celestial Bodies, and Sins Plus.  For personal use, use whatever you want.  For use in a publicly released mod, you should get permission from TohKlidan and Uzii respectively for use of their mods.  As for the skyboxes, I was going to create more then just the two additional ones that have been a part of DS for a long time, but I got lazy and now I just don't want to.    All those two are is two of the normal ones with their colors inverted.  I doubt you really need anyone's permission for that since it's technically not original content.

I designed the add-on pack so that the core part of it should be used to overwrite the files in the DS 1.00 release and then activating the minimods as you would normally do so following the lists provided in the read me.  If you're running the core part of the add on pack as a minimod, it should work, but wasn't really intended to be used in that way.  If you're not using the core part of the add on pack at all, then I don't know what you should expect since that's not how I put it all together.  It's pretty stable on my end, I don't usually release anything that would cause a constant crash so you may possibly have to redownload it or enable a couple of minimods at a time to help narrow down which one is problematic for you.  I can't really fix anything anymore having deleted all of my modding tools, however if it's just one specific minimod I can probably provide you with a link to just that portion from a much more reliable download location.

I want to say it's someone from the old battlestar galactica cast, but I could be wrong...

I have Trinity through steam, I put the mod folder in diplomacy but it did show up in Diplomacy mod files.

What do I have to do with steam?

Put the mod in there.

Appdata may be hidden for you, you can manually search for it, or look up how to show hidden files on google for your specific OS.

"Facepalm"

What part of I have the game on Steam did you not understand?

Steam doesn't arrange the game that way. Diplomacy is in a folder called Diplomacy located at C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\sins of a solar empire trinity\Diplomacy

Unless you provide steam specific instructions, your instructions are useless.

His instruction are vaild. Steam or not. Your not looking for the install folder your looking for the appdata (all Games for Windows games must use this hidden folder), which is what he gave you.

So next time you gonna be an ass, do it right.

Also if you find his instructions to hard to follow, you could use the ones provided in the Original Post, but hey...Im guessing since it wasnt on Steam you could look.

I hope you enjoy the mod when you enable it and if you have any questions the individuals here in this thread are more than willing to help answer them but please to be courteous and do not jump to conclusions about the 'usefulness' of the people and their instructions here. This is a hobby that every one here does out of their spare time and while we may occasionally be wrong about things, generally we try to give current and up-to-date answers to questions people post here.

Actually, that image came from a portrait pack that was released in various forms. It's by the same artist that did a lot of those pictures, including the guy with the blue cloth over his face. I think it's just a drawing of some non-descript guy and can affirm that it's not one of the cast members from the original Battlestar Galactica. The image is monocromatic blue and the insect species (I think to think of them as 'valued citizens' under the Vasari) are also by the same author.

Sorry I can't help you more.

Btw, wouldn't this be a much creepier image for the Provoke Hysteria affect?

Well the fact that you didn't even try my instructions first before jumping on your high horse tells me maybe I shouldn't have replied in the first place.

NOW WE KNOW!!

Only Rebellion (which Distant Stars is not set up for) has changed the pathways.
