Multiplayer Games:
We've setup a thread for everyone to organise their multiplayer games in and also setup example times and dates for most people to meet up and start games. These are what we hope to be the main times for people to be around and want to play games together.

The times are:
4pm EST (9pm GMT) Saturdays & Sundays
9pm EST (2am GMT)
Saturdays & Sundays

If you want to organise other games please go ahead using the same topic to consolidate all the information in one place and hopefully get more games together within our community. These games are for PvP, PvAI & PvPvAIso come along and we'll get some games going!

Screenshots:
We've setup a thread so you can all post your screenshots to share with us the Distant Stars team and its players. Im sure we're all intrigued to see what kinds of battles and events you've all been having on the mod aswell.

Lore:
We know some of you guys love to role play whilst using Distant Stars, and here's a topic for you guys to post all of your role playing stories, character profiles and anything else you can imagine.

Maps:
Some of you avid map makers out there have produced some great maps but never really had them recognised because they've got lost. Well here's a topic for you to post a link to the download (we can even provide mirrors if necessary) a screenshot or two of the map for us all the preview and if enough people like it we'll even include the map in with the actual mod!

Please visit our website and for more information, change logs, downloads, and to report bugs. Our website can be found here: http://distantstars.mmobase.com

Bug Reporting

If you want to report a bug please use the Bug Report feature on our website:
http://distantstars.mmobase.com/?m=reportabug

Please include as much information as possible, if you have an error log feel free to post it on these forums and we'll take it from there. If you can reproduce the error please include the error log (read below to find out how to enable error logs) and include as much detail on how to reproduce the problem.

To enable logging:
Windows Vista/Windows 7:
C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Windows Username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Setting
or
Windows XP:
C:\Documents and settings\<Your Windows Username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Setting

Open the user.setting file (using Notepad, Wordpad or any text editor) and scroll down to the bottom 7 lines from the bottom is the line:
LogOutput FALSE
Change FALSE to TRUE
LogOutput TRUE

and from then on any Log files will be saved to the debug folder:
Windows Vista/Windows 7:
C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Windows Username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Debug
or
Windows XP:
C:\Documents and settings\<Your Windows Username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Debug

If you get these log files to us (you can just paste them in to a forum post) we can hopefully get your issues sorted.

Frequently Asked Questions

All files are compressed using 7Zip to shrink the download filesize. To extract these files you must use WinRAR or 7Zip.
Any Patches should overwrite the original install directory, either by extracting over the original folder, or cut/copy & pasting over the existing file/folder structure.

1) My game keeps crashing, is there anything I can do to stop it?
i) Are you running the game on maximum (highest) settings? if so, lower them to High or Medium, there is a known issue with the game using up too much memory, there is nothing we can do about this, also no matter how powerful your pc is, it is affected by this issue no matter the pc it is not above this crashing issue, it is a game problem not a hardware one, so quite simply lower your settings. If you still have an issue with crashing see point two.
ii) Give us as detailed information as possible about the crash, what was happening at the time of the crash, what races, ships, abilities were involved. If you can supply a Debug Log (see above for more information about logging) and post a bug report on our website.

2) The loading screens and portrait pictures dont appear properly, whats wrong?
i) This is an issue with ATI based graphics cards (rarely affects Nvidia based cards) we're looking in to the issue.

3) Why dont you support converting Distant Stars in to TXT format?
i) Quite simply many things can go wrong with converting your mod to TXT, we cant help you with something you've probably broken yourself.

4) Can I mod Distant Stars for myself?
i) Yes you can however please do not distribute our mod or our mod that you have edited to the public. You must ask for permission to do so, we will regrettably stop distributing our mod to all if users abuse our work.

5) Your mod is in BIN format I can't edit the files, what can I do?
i) You can convert the mod to TXT format however we wont offer any support to versions of the mod that have been converted to TXT.

6) Why is Distant Stars distributed in BIN format?
i) Mods load faster in BIN format and are less likely to have issues in this format.

7) I'm having trouble installing the MOD, do you have any more instructions?
i) Carbon was kind enough to do some more advanced instructions out here.

8) Is there any way to make new maps for Distant Stars using GalaxyForge?
i) Within the Distant Stars Extras folder there is a folder called Galaxy Forge, Copy and Paste this folder (or its contents) over your original Galaxy Forge folder (or its contents) replacing any files if it asks you to. When you start Galaxy Forge next you'll be able to use all of our planets.

Or, the DIY approach (without custom icons):

ii) The GalaxyForge supplied by the devs will still work with our Mod, however to be able to access all of our planetary bonuses, templates, planet types and stars you will need to take our GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (found in the GameInfo folder of the mod) and place it in to your GalaxyForge folder, overwriting the original GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (if you still wish to make maps for the original game keep a backup of the original file). This will allow you to use all of the Galaxy changes included in our mod.

Note: Any maps made for Distant Stars will not work with other Mods. See #8.2 for DIY instructions for map making or take the appropriate files from Entrenchment, they're cross-client compatible.

Some statistics...

Since August 2009 to February 2011 we have had over...

400,000 Unique visits to the website
12,000GB (12TB) of data transferred from our website

That equates to over 60,000 Unique downloads of the entire mod, excluding the excess of 20,000 Patches downloaded.

Thanks to everyone that has supported us this far and making our mod as popular as it is!

Greetings.  I just downloaded this mod and I was wondering, is there a listing of everything in this mod?  Like the planetary shields, is there a way to bypass them ever?  or does it just effectively make a dead planet for the player?  Just wondering and thanx for an awesome mod.

**Edit** Nevermind, I figured it out.  I guess I just have to play to find out stuff, like the first time I picked up SoaSE!

on Sep 12, 2012

Hi guys,

Got it all running no problems, seems stable to me! Research speed seems to be a little on the slow side now though it might just be my machine. Have yet to play as all factions so will try and see what I find!

Still finding the Advent underpowered compared to the Vasari, but the 1.04 limit they brought in on superweapons makes a HUGE difference to gameplay. No more novalith spamming even with TEC loyals!

Still have an issue with no elite strike craft for Advent when playing as human and the gunships/ews are only buildable for the starbase. AI doesn't appear to have this problem. Not sure if that's intentional!

Titans do seem to be nicely balanced now. Would love to see more upgrades for them in the formal Rebellion release. Sure it's something you're looking into along with those oh so finicky pirates

Great work, really enjoy playing it!

*edit* Sorry Advent Loyal can also have EWS in hanger defence. Rebel though seems hit and miss whether the EWS for hangers appear or not....

Is there a process for getting the 1.04 to work? Mine's all no worky.

Is there a process for getting the 1.04 to work? Mine's all no worky.

You need the standard mod installed correctly. Then un-zip the new 1.04 mod files over the others. Make sure the old and new mod files are all within the *newly created* "Mods Rebellion 1.04" folder as opposed to the old "Mods Rebellion 1.03" folder.

Then just enable in the in-game mods menu.

I hate it when these end quote thing's don't work -Stant

You download the 1.03 full version and unarchive it.  You download my update and unarchive that.  You cut/copy the files from my update and paste them in the 1.03 version folder and overwrite the files in there.  Move the whole mod to your rebellion 1.04 mods folder.  Start your game.  Go to options > Mods (I assume the menu is still the same).  Select Distant Stars, click enable, and you should see some checksum number pop up.  It would be helpful if those that have it working would post their checksums so I have a number to tell people that they should be seeing.  Then click apply and after a short pause DS should be running.  Try it a few times, I hear rebellion likes to crash more then asian drivers.    Also redownload both the mod and my update if things just refuse to work, bad downloads happen...  Often.  Especially when you deal with the sheer volume of files in the archive that is as large as it is.  A few bad bits of data in the download process won't affect you very much when you're downloading a 100 Meg video, but in this case, it can really screw you out of a couple hundred files.  So grabbing two or three copies (Ryat had to download it 18 times once I believe) just to get a working set is what we like to call, normal and expected.

If that doesn't work, then you need to be more specific with your problem.  Run the dev.exe and try to play the mod with that and tell me what errors you see.

Remember fans of DS, I do my best to update this mod for you all and I don't even have Rebellion!  (Don't offer to buy me a copy, I won't accept it, money isn't the issue, Steam is and to a much smaller degree Stardock is, don't ask about that either.  I've said my piece, voted with my wallet, and that's it.  Done.)  Assholes who call me selfish for not helping as much as I used to, and pricks like Mike_Snyder who feel it's easier to blast everyone rather then finishing 2nd grade and learning how to read really just don't deserve our help, and if anyone would like to spam their accounts with the same kind of hate and vitriol explaining to them how idiotic they are and how their dumb assery will not be tolerated, please, be my guest, you can even tell them and any forum mod who questions you that I gave you full permission on my behalf to ruthlessly torment them for as long as you feel like since I'm a busy guy and love to do just that, but can't be here all of the time to police the masses.  I suggest using the email option since the private message feature of these forums only holds 100 messages.  Little tip for you all.  ;]  For everyone else who is actually civilized about these things, just saying it doesn't work, doesn't help us at all.  We need details.  Often times when someone says nothing happens it's because there's one too many folder depth levels and they're getting a zero checksum, or they've got a really hinky checksum number and neglect to state that, which means nothing we say will work because the files they have are all completely messed up.

So in conclusion...  Like the saying goes, help me help you.  Don't be an idiot here on this thread because I eat Idiot-O's for breakfast and playing with torches and fire is in fact in my job description so I can burn you hotter, harder, and more severely then Satan himself with all of the fires of Hell behind him...  And that's when I'm just having fun.  Okay?  Great!  Now you all just go on and have yourselves a fine and wonderful day.  I need to go read my daughter's facebook now so I know which boys I'm going to have to kill and bury this weekend.    Ciao.

This should work. If not post pack and we'll see what we can do. Screenshots of how and what order you are enabling these items might be helpful too.

Did that. Still no worky.

It may be a messed up file that may need to be re-downloaded.

What does not work? Does it still look like normal SoaSE:R or does it mini-dump at some point in the game? Are the graphics wonked up? Does it dump to desk top during application of the mod?

What folder are you unzipping the mod too? What order are you stacking them in the mod window inside of the game?

Screenshots and more information are needed before we can help you any further.

^ This does nothing to aid us helping you. Do you understand the file path system in Sins? Have you applied mods before with Rebellion? Are you using any other versions of Sins other than SoaSE:R such as Entrenchment or Trinity/Diplomacy? We need details!

Redownloading the 1.031 with the DS Update and Minimods. Will try again.
Popping it into the 1.04 mod folder.

Unless there's an actual "1.04" download somewhere that just isn't complete.

Minidump. I'm not sure what else to tell you beyond "applied Alpha .1, then .1 extras, then Better gas giants." And it failed.

Minidump. I'm not sure what else to tell you beyond "applied Alpha .1, then .1 extras, then Better gas giants." And it failed.

All i can do is repeat what i typed before

"Updated mod works fine for me, install old mod, overwrite with new files and thats all. Activate ingame and its all there. Minidumps exist as usual but thats a sins thing...."

I overwrite the original mod with the update files first, then i overwrite it again and again with Better gas giants first then Flagships. In the ingame menu, i only have 1 thing to activate and all the minimod stuff is ingame.

Leuthesius could you please take screen shots of the process step by step as you try to place the mod folders and then the order in which you activate the mod? I am not trying to be patronizing but there are a million little things that you could be doing wrong while you think you are doing them correctly.

I am only trying to help.

Please humor me and answer each of the questions that I will quote below as well as taking screen shots of your steps & file path directory for the mod folders. Is it minidumping during the activation stage? Does it work if you don't try to use the mini-mods? We need more information.

Just a quick note to those having issues re mini dump. If running windows Vista/7, running the program as admin works wonders

on Sep 13, 2012

*Facepalm*

I can't believe that.

I was going through the process and taking screenshots of everything. No changes in the process mind you. And it enables without the minidump.

Force crash about an hour in.

edit: Another crash. Takes about half an hour.

*sigh*
