Multiplayer Games:
We've setup a thread for everyone to organise their multiplayer games in and also setup example times and dates for most people to meet up and start games. These are what we hope to be the main times for people to be around and want to play games together.

The times are:
4pm EST (9pm GMT) Saturdays & Sundays
9pm EST (2am GMT)
Saturdays & Sundays

If you want to organise other games please go ahead using the same topic to consolidate all the information in one place and hopefully get more games together within our community. These games are for PvP, PvAI & PvPvAIso come along and we'll get some games going!

Screenshots:
We've setup a thread so you can all post your screenshots to share with us the Distant Stars team and its players. Im sure we're all intrigued to see what kinds of battles and events you've all been having on the mod aswell.

Lore:
We know some of you guys love to role play whilst using Distant Stars, and here's a topic for you guys to post all of your role playing stories, character profiles and anything else you can imagine.

Maps:
Some of you avid map makers out there have produced some great maps but never really had them recognised because they've got lost. Well here's a topic for you to post a link to the download (we can even provide mirrors if necessary) a screenshot or two of the map for us all the preview and if enough people like it we'll even include the map in with the actual mod!

Frequently Asked Questions

All files are compressed using 7Zip to shrink the download filesize. To extract these files you must use WinRAR or 7Zip.
Any Patches should overwrite the original install directory, either by extracting over the original folder, or cut/copy & pasting over the existing file/folder structure.

1) My game keeps crashing, is there anything I can do to stop it?
i) Are you running the game on maximum (highest) settings? if so, lower them to High or Medium, there is a known issue with the game using up too much memory, there is nothing we can do about this, also no matter how powerful your pc is, it is affected by this issue no matter the pc it is not above this crashing issue, it is a game problem not a hardware one, so quite simply lower your settings. If you still have an issue with crashing see point two.
ii) Give us as detailed information as possible about the crash, what was happening at the time of the crash, what races, ships, abilities were involved. If you can supply a Debug Log (see above for more information about logging) and post a bug report on our website.

2) The loading screens and portrait pictures dont appear properly, whats wrong?
i) This is an issue with ATI based graphics cards (rarely affects Nvidia based cards) we're looking in to the issue.

3) Why dont you support converting Distant Stars in to TXT format?
i) Quite simply many things can go wrong with converting your mod to TXT, we cant help you with something you've probably broken yourself.

4) Can I mod Distant Stars for myself?
i) Yes you can however please do not distribute our mod or our mod that you have edited to the public. You must ask for permission to do so, we will regrettably stop distributing our mod to all if users abuse our work.

5) Your mod is in BIN format I can't edit the files, what can I do?
i) You can convert the mod to TXT format however we wont offer any support to versions of the mod that have been converted to TXT.

6) Why is Distant Stars distributed in BIN format?
i) Mods load faster in BIN format and are less likely to have issues in this format.

7) I'm having trouble installing the MOD, do you have any more instructions?
i) Carbon was kind enough to do some more advanced instructions out here.

8) Is there any way to make new maps for Distant Stars using GalaxyForge?
i) Within the Distant Stars Extras folder there is a folder called Galaxy Forge, Copy and Paste this folder (or its contents) over your original Galaxy Forge folder (or its contents) replacing any files if it asks you to. When you start Galaxy Forge next you'll be able to use all of our planets.

Or, the DIY approach (without custom icons):

ii) The GalaxyForge supplied by the devs will still work with our Mod, however to be able to access all of our planetary bonuses, templates, planet types and stars you will need to take our GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (found in the GameInfo folder of the mod) and place it in to your GalaxyForge folder, overwriting the original GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (if you still wish to make maps for the original game keep a backup of the original file). This will allow you to use all of the Galaxy changes included in our mod.

Note: Any maps made for Distant Stars will not work with other Mods. See #8.2 for DIY instructions for map making or take the appropriate files from Entrenchment, they're cross-client compatible.

Some statistics...

Since August 2009 to February 2011 we have had over...

400,000 Unique visits to the website
12,000GB (12TB) of data transferred from our website

That equates to over 60,000 Unique downloads of the entire mod, excluding the excess of 20,000 Patches downloaded.

Thanks to everyone that has supported us this far and making our mod as popular as it is!

Hey guys.  I just started playing with this mod on Diplomacy and I had a couple of questions.  When I put all the settings on fastest, I tended to only find planets with 1 or 2 mining nodes each.  Is this intentional for the sake of balancing, or am I just having horrible luck?  Also, is the fast setting unchanged, or was it made slightly faster than the original?  And lastly, why were Capital Ships made more expensive?  Were they made stronger?  Because I didn't notice any significant difference from what I saw when I chose my first Capital Ship.

as to your first question, thats just horrible luck

as to the second, only a slight increase

And lastly, why were Capital Ships made more expensive?  Were they made stronger?  Because I didn't notice any significant difference from what I saw when I chose my first Capital Ship.

I'll field this one...  They were indeed made stronger.  I'll use the Kol as an example.

Unmodded Kol: $3000, O400, C250, Build Time 68,Hull 3000, Armor 5, Shields 1250, Antimatter 225, Beam damage 9, Autocannon damage 34, Laser Damage 8, bombardment damage 43.

Modded Kol: $5500, O1000, C750, Build Time 100, Hull 3750, Armor 5, Shields 1362, Antimatter 225, Beam Damage 14, Autocannon Damage 54, Laser Damage 13, Bombardment Damage 43.

That's just the level 1 difference.  Later levels the difference is a little wider.  Basically, a DS Kol going heads up would crush unmodded Kol, so they cost more.  Throw on top of that the added research levels...  A DS cap ship can basically stand on it's own against a fleet from the unmodded side and win.  The other ships have similar differences.

Well bummer on the Ready to Play. Guess I'll have to stick with Teamspeak and good old friends list via ICO.

on Mar 24, 2010

I hate to sound like a newb, but what is ICO? I don't do MP, so they abbreviation is beyond me. I just want to know if I'm suppose to look somewhere beyond the multiplayer hookup the game defaults to.

on Mar 24, 2010

ICO= Ironclad Online

on Mar 24, 2010

Okay, so nothing I'm missing out on.

on Mar 24, 2010

The only real advantage Ready to Play has over ICO that's currently in use is the matchmaking based on a gamer's version of online dating...  You put in your qualities and search for others with the same or let the computer do it for you, and if you can't find anyone, it recommends games you should play that may or may not have others playing them... To me, it just seems to be more of a marketing gimick then a real service.

"Hey, we're sorry your community broke up a half dozen times so you have as difficult of a time as possible finding random matches with quality people, now we're giving you a matchmaking service with no lobby so you can't really chat up a group of people, and if you can't find anyone to play your version of whatever game when you're on, then we'd like to sell you a game that others may or may not be playing.  By the way, did we forget to mention these are older games that you've gotten rid of for some reason that no one else is really playing any more anyway but you won't figure that out until you buy it again from us?  No?  Okay, good, because we're keeping that a secret.  But if you don't like the game you bought, you can always turn around and sell it to some other sucker."

Besides, we have a thread that's 4 months old now dedicated to DS matches...  How well is that being utilized?  Not very, so R2P isn't going to improve your odds any.  Plus, it's only being viewed as an alternative to Steam if you want to take a few steps back, so that right there isn't much of a good way to break out onto the scene.

on Mar 24, 2010

Well I was gonna add anyone who had it as a friend R2P. Since I have it.  But since no one has it it will go back to being unused. It does offer suggested friends, which is neat. But you can anyone. It has a chat feature. It doesnt strike me as a gimmick rather a beta version of the new I::R (Impluse Reactor).

I was just looking at other ways to meet DS players and hang out with the few I talk to already. Thats why I brought R2P and Teamspeak up.I have MSN also but no one seems to like that besides the core DS team.

As for the MP topic, Im really really bummed about how little its used. There are 10+ ICO names and not a singleone is ever one, well when Im on checking the small hope someone is online to hang out with. There is no reason with the ammount of players that play DS we cant all enjoy some fellowship. Heck by the download stats we should have an army of players.

I guess Im stuck with EVE for my fellowship while gaming fix.

ICO just made it too tough to play and promote.  I remember being a Sage for the old mPlayer when it was still a brand new thing back in the mid 90's, playing C&C and Rainbow Six and Total Annihilation.  Never had a problem ever finding a game.  Why?  Because mPlayer had one giant lobby per game so that it didn't matter what version or mod you had, there were people always loitering there.  100's usually.  Then there were usually a dozen or two sub-lobbies that were player created that were for specific types or styles of games, and people lingering around in some of the more popular ones all of the time.  Never once ever had a problem finding a game to drop in on.  Plus it helped that the retarded players were all playing quake at the time and leaving us real gamers to enjoy some mindless violence and destruction.  >=P

My "SINS" time is usually pretty limited because my wife has taken over the computer that can run it.

That pretty much leaves single player, but if we can schedule a time I can make it.

on Mar 24, 2010

Here's your schedule:

https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/371563

The pattern almost never changes so you can easily schedule time a month in advance.

@GrayLord: Sounds like there is a lower PC - why she dont use them?

Right, I've tried that logic, since she only does GAIA and Facebook which arn't hardware intensive.  Her comeback is all her files and links are on the new computer.  I haven't succeeded in convincing her to simply move the files and links over.

on Mar 25, 2010

Hey guys, the  webpage that the download is hosted on is out of date, is there somewhere else I can DL this mod?
