Multiplayer Games:
We've setup a thread for everyone to organise their multiplayer games in and also setup example times and dates for most people to meet up and start games. These are what we hope to be the main times for people to be around and want to play games together.

The times are:
4pm EST (9pm GMT) Saturdays & Sundays
9pm EST (2am GMT)
Saturdays & Sundays

If you want to organise other games please go ahead using the same topic to consolidate all the information in one place and hopefully get more games together within our community. These games are for PvP, PvAI & PvPvAIso come along and we'll get some games going!

Screenshots:
We've setup a thread so you can all post your screenshots to share with us the Distant Stars team and its players. Im sure we're all intrigued to see what kinds of battles and events you've all been having on the mod aswell.

Lore:
We know some of you guys love to role play whilst using Distant Stars, and here's a topic for you guys to post all of your role playing stories, character profiles and anything else you can imagine.

Maps:
Some of you avid map makers out there have produced some great maps but never really had them recognised because they've got lost. Well here's a topic for you to post a link to the download (we can even provide mirrors if necessary) a screenshot or two of the map for us all the preview and if enough people like it we'll even include the map in with the actual mod!

Please visit our website and for more information, change logs, downloads, and to report bugs. Our website can be found here: http://distantstars.mmobase.com

If you get these log files to us (you can just paste them in to a forum post) we can hopefully get your issues sorted.

Frequently Asked Questions

All files are compressed using 7Zip to shrink the download filesize. To extract these files you must use WinRAR or 7Zip.
Any Patches should overwrite the original install directory, either by extracting over the original folder, or cut/copy & pasting over the existing file/folder structure.

1) My game keeps crashing, is there anything I can do to stop it?
i) Are you running the game on maximum (highest) settings? if so, lower them to High or Medium, there is a known issue with the game using up too much memory, there is nothing we can do about this, also no matter how powerful your pc is, it is affected by this issue no matter the pc it is not above this crashing issue, it is a game problem not a hardware one, so quite simply lower your settings. If you still have an issue with crashing see point two.
ii) Give us as detailed information as possible about the crash, what was happening at the time of the crash, what races, ships, abilities were involved. If you can supply a Debug Log (see above for more information about logging) and post a bug report on our website.

2) The loading screens and portrait pictures dont appear properly, whats wrong?
i) This is an issue with ATI based graphics cards (rarely affects Nvidia based cards) we're looking in to the issue.

3) Why dont you support converting Distant Stars in to TXT format?
i) Quite simply many things can go wrong with converting your mod to TXT, we cant help you with something you've probably broken yourself.

4) Can I mod Distant Stars for myself?
i) Yes you can however please do not distribute our mod or our mod that you have edited to the public. You must ask for permission to do so, we will regrettably stop distributing our mod to all if users abuse our work.

5) Your mod is in BIN format I can't edit the files, what can I do?
i) You can convert the mod to TXT format however we wont offer any support to versions of the mod that have been converted to TXT.

6) Why is Distant Stars distributed in BIN format?
i) Mods load faster in BIN format and are less likely to have issues in this format.

7) I'm having trouble installing the MOD, do you have any more instructions?
i) Carbon was kind enough to do some more advanced instructions out here.

8) Is there any way to make new maps for Distant Stars using GalaxyForge?
i) Within the Distant Stars Extras folder there is a folder called Galaxy Forge, Copy and Paste this folder (or its contents) over your original Galaxy Forge folder (or its contents) replacing any files if it asks you to. When you start Galaxy Forge next you'll be able to use all of our planets.

Or, the DIY approach (without custom icons):

ii) The GalaxyForge supplied by the devs will still work with our Mod, however to be able to access all of our planetary bonuses, templates, planet types and stars you will need to take our GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (found in the GameInfo folder of the mod) and place it in to your GalaxyForge folder, overwriting the original GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (if you still wish to make maps for the original game keep a backup of the original file). This will allow you to use all of the Galaxy changes included in our mod.

Note: Any maps made for Distant Stars will not work with other Mods. See #8.2 for DIY instructions for map making or take the appropriate files from Entrenchment, they're cross-client compatible.

Some statistics...

Since August 2009 to February 2011 we have had over...

400,000 Unique visits to the website
12,000GB (12TB) of data transferred from our website

That equates to over 60,000 Unique downloads of the entire mod, excluding the excess of 20,000 Patches downloaded.

Thanks to everyone that has supported us this far and making our mod as popular as it is!

When you reinstalled did you delete everything the uninstall process left over...aka folders etc etc etc. Its been know in the un modded game to cause problems if folders and files are left after the uninstall and  you try to reinstall.

As for why it works sometimes and this not....welcome to SINS. We had soooo many problems over the development of the mod with troubleshooting things b/c sometimes they work sometimes they dont.

It could be that first time you didnt have many things running in the background and you do now...I see thats what your thinking could be the problem also. Or it could be a bad reinstall. Or it could be SINS being stupid. It can be very stupid at times....ask Nacey. lol

I hate to be a debby downer still...but if you do get it run I doubt you can have a long good game with just 1GB. But let us know if you are still having problems...also what is checksum when you try to enable the mod.

I tried kill a bunch of processes, as well as minimizing all game options. the game definetly ran faster, but still it didn't load. I also tried deleting the cache in the local folder. didn't help. Tomorrow I'll try deleting it all and running a fresh install.

The first time I played, I actually played a full game in a 100 planet galaxy with 4 players. made it all the way to the end (well i maxed tech and units and killed everyone. Didn't need to conquer the whole galaxy). To be fair though, I'm probably more patient with low FPS's than most because I'm so used to this computer (almost three years old, and it was no stud even then).

I'm gonna have to say that when you install the game, the installer shuts down process you normally can't shut off so that it can write files to your hard drive without a hitch.  Install shield typically makes itself the highest priority thing running so it doesn't get interfered with.  When you play the mod in this state, there's enough RAM (counting the swap files of course) to play the game.  After you reboot, all of those processes shut off, or suspended, or deprioritised, or whatever, all come back to their normal state and go back to chewing up your RAM.  That's purely a guess since I'm not about to go uninstalling and reinstalling things a bunch of times just to check, but it seems the most likely reason.

At some point you have to face the facts, your little laptop doesn't even meet the minimum requirements to play the game, so count yourself lucky that you have enough of a system that you can play.

Don't even look at the recommended requirements, because that's the neighborhood I'd be looking at as minimum required to run the mod, in which case you fail severely at the graphics card and RAM levels.

Hey DS guys,

The SOP mod that everyone is raving about, does it work with the DS mod and if so, what is the check sum mod # and the order it should be placed, when I installed it first, the skybox background had a weird distortion in it. It look cool but you can tell something was wrong. And when I had at last, it just crashed and mini-dump. Thanks again for your answers. Also, finally got my main computer up and running again. Bad thing is had a great game I was working on and did not get backed up to the ext HD.

Bison.....

Currently the SOP mod is at odds with DS, we will be watching it closely and hope to incorporate it soon

DISTANT STARS MULTIPLAYER TONIGHT!!!!! BE THERE!!!!! OR SUFFER MY WRATH!

on Mar 27, 2010

Wow...I"m scared of you...

on Mar 28, 2010

Oh, well that's a nice change, playing my first game in who knows how long and I get a plasma storm near by... BUT there is a nice updated change there... a Starbase... I wonder what other changes have been made

on Mar 28, 2010

Multiplayer was a success! Ryat couldn't get in for the first FFA cause of some checksum issues. But after the mayhem of secret alliances and reigning death from above, Carbon shuffled out with Ryat and we had a comp stomp that was anything but. Looking to finish the game later, but it'll be an uphill struggle for certain. Not sure if Gray Dragon can get back in (a dropping issue), but when he sees his forces, he might not want in.

Hmm, i would LOVE to join in myself, but i can only play this mod on single player, if i do it online, the lag kills bad after awhile, what i found that helps, dont build a fleet, just caps, BUT, that dont help much online , i sooo wanna beable to join in with you guys :/

on Mar 28, 2010

lol, generally thats all I build anyway, held off two unfair AIs with only 6 caps 3 on one side and 3 on the other, just ask Draakjacht, he was impressed (though I had to use LFs to give myself and early boost)

on Mar 28, 2010

Most of the time I only end up using Cap ships as well and leave the frigates that I have built to act as early warning and defense.  Sort of like the militia fleets that are sitting around doing nothing at each planet before you take over.  Again, sorry I couldn't hang out longer, but at least the teamspeak before the game was amusing.

on Mar 28, 2010

I went the all cap route too. First game I didn't do much, but the second game I was hopping back and forth providing assistance. Damned AIs were on my like flies on dung.

on Mar 28, 2010

Am I the only person who doesnt build hordes of Caps? I feel like the one kid who didnt get the invite to class party. Thanks to all who show up in form or another, I had a total blast playing and laughing on TS. And for those of you didnt show up....

Your Diplomatic standing have dropped. Carbon is now Hateful towards you.

on Mar 28, 2010

Hi guys, first off awsome mod ! I have only played for 15 minutes, so I am sure I missed 80% of the patch in total ( the new effects etc )

However, I wont get that far.. it crashed 15 minutes into the game, I just targeted my Heavy cruiser + Carrier + 2 Frigates to attack the enemy ships, and it crashed

Second time it crashed, I noticed all the asteroids were not showing up, which looked pretty wierd! So I checked to mod in main menu, and crashed again..

I use Trinity version,  diplomacy v1.011.

Without the mod, I haven't crashed at all since I bought it, but it seems to with this mod, which is a damned shame!

pc specs:

HDD: Western Digital 2x  WD1500HLFS (150 GB) Raptor's in raid 0
PSU: TruePower New Series TP-750 (750 Watt)
MBB: Asus P6T SE (Intel® X58)
RAM: Kingston HyperX 6 GB DDR3-1600 Tri-Kit 8 8 8 24
CPU: Core™ i7 950 (4x 3066 MHz)
GFX: 2x HD5870 (ATI Radeon HD5870) (crossfire)
SFX: Club 3D Theatron Agrippa 7.1

*edit* digged around a bit more, it is the 2 gig thingie I guess? How come that without the mod it doesn't crash, but with it, it does? Trinity perhaps doesn't reach it? Even in 12 hour games =s
