Multiplayer Games:
We've setup a thread for everyone to organise their multiplayer games in and also setup example times and dates for most people to meet up and start games. These are what we hope to be the main times for people to be around and want to play games together.

The times are:
4pm EST (9pm GMT) Saturdays & Sundays
9pm EST (2am GMT)

If you want to organise other games please go ahead using the same topic to consolidate all the information in one place and hopefully get more games together within our community. These games are for PvP, PvAI & PvPvAIso come along and we'll get some games going!

We've setup a thread so you can all post your screenshots to share with us the Distant Stars team and its players. Im sure we're all intrigued to see what kinds of battles and events you've all been having on the mod aswell.

We know some of you guys love to role play whilst using Distant Stars, and here's a topic for you guys to post all of your role playing stories, character profiles and anything else you can imagine.

Maps:
Some of you avid map makers out there have produced some great maps but never really had them recognised because they've got lost. Well here's a topic for you to post a link to the download (we can even provide mirrors if necessary) a screenshot or two of the map for us all the preview and if enough people like it we'll even include the map in with the actual mod!

Bug Reporting

If you want to report a bug please use the Bug Report feature on our website:

Please include as much information as possible, if you have an error log feel free to post it on these forums and we'll take it from there. If you can reproduce the error please include the error log (read below to find out how to enable error logs) and include as much detail on how to reproduce the problem.

To enable logging:
Windows Vista/Windows 7:

or

Open the user.setting file (using Notepad, Wordpad or any text editor) and scroll down to the bottom 7 lines from the bottom is the line:
LogOutput FALSE
Change FALSE to TRUE
LogOutput TRUE

and from then on any Log files will be saved to the debug folder:

If you get these log files to us (you can just paste them in to a forum post) we can hopefully get your issues sorted.

Frequently Asked Questions

All files are compressed using 7Zip to shrink the download filesize. To extract these files you must use WinRAR or 7Zip.
Any Patches should overwrite the original install directory, either by extracting over the original folder, or cut/copy & pasting over the existing file/folder structure.

1) My game keeps crashing, is there anything I can do to stop it?
i) Are you running the game on maximum (highest) settings? if so, lower them to High or Medium, there is a known issue with the game using up too much memory, there is nothing we can do about this, also no matter how powerful your pc is, it is affected by this issue no matter the pc it is not above this crashing issue, it is a game problem not a hardware one, so quite simply lower your settings. If you still have an issue with crashing see point two.
ii) Give us as detailed information as possible about the crash, what was happening at the time of the crash, what races, ships, abilities were involved. If you can supply a Debug Log (see above for more information about logging) and post a bug report on our website.

2) The loading screens and portrait pictures dont appear properly, whats wrong?
i) This is an issue with ATI based graphics cards (rarely affects Nvidia based cards) we're looking in to the issue.

3) Why dont you support converting Distant Stars in to TXT format?
i) Quite simply many things can go wrong with converting your mod to TXT, we cant help you with something you've probably broken yourself.

4) Can I mod Distant Stars for myself?
i) Yes you can however please do not distribute our mod or our mod that you have edited to the public. You must ask for permission to do so, we will regrettably stop distributing our mod to all if users abuse our work.

5) Your mod is in BIN format I can't edit the files, what can I do?
i) You can convert the mod to TXT format however we wont offer any support to versions of the mod that have been converted to TXT.

6) Why is Distant Stars distributed in BIN format?
i) Mods load faster in BIN format and are less likely to have issues in this format.

7) I'm having trouble installing the MOD, do you have any more instructions?
i) Carbon was kind enough to do some more advanced instructions out here.

8) Is there any way to make new maps for Distant Stars using GalaxyForge?
i) Within the Distant Stars Extras folder there is a folder called Galaxy Forge, Copy and Paste this folder (or its contents) over your original Galaxy Forge folder (or its contents) replacing any files if it asks you to. When you start Galaxy Forge next you'll be able to use all of our planets.

Or, the DIY approach (without custom icons):

ii) The GalaxyForge supplied by the devs will still work with our Mod, however to be able to access all of our planetary bonuses, templates, planet types and stars you will need to take our GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (found in the GameInfo folder of the mod) and place it in to your GalaxyForge folder, overwriting the original GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (if you still wish to make maps for the original game keep a backup of the original file). This will allow you to use all of the Galaxy changes included in our mod.

Note: Any maps made for Distant Stars will not work with other Mods. See #8.2 for DIY instructions for map making or take the appropriate files from Entrenchment, they're cross-client compatible.

What features?

None, not sure where you got that from. Diplomacy 0.7 has all of .995 Entrenchment Entrenchment features and more.

As for 95b2 diplomacy,I wont download it as long as all existing bugs will be fixed...

Bugs are constantly being fixed (see regular sins game). Diplomacy 99B2 is fully compatible with Sins Diplomacy 1.2 where as Diplomacy 0.7 will give you a mini-dump as it is no longer up to date.

I've just tried it repeatedly and the Diplo links do not work.  The others do.  Could be a regional thing or a routing issue over the net.  And I'm 100% positive the link he posted isn't working since I just looked and checked that one again, so if he's using those links, I'm still correct.  ;]

Hello all fellow Distant Stars People.
(okay a bit lame but oh well)

I would like to introduce the Flagship Mini-Mod. Currently in Beta form so please feel free to make suggestions/critiques. I am currently trying to figure out a way for it to be researched and while only allowing you to have one but allowing you to rebuild it if destroyed. Currently you begin with it and if you lose it, sorry. Other things like HUD icons and such may be changed as I figure that out, or outsource it.

It has come to my attention after playing this mod for many months (infact its the ONLY mod I play when i bring it to lan parties and such) that their needs to be a few balance changes done.

I'll start with the TEC

 

56 -60 armor on a starbase? really guys? It took an entire pirate fleet (with powerful pirates) plus a supporting Cruel Computer fleet to take it down. thats ridiculous!

15 + armor on a fighter/bomber strikecraft - once again, this is stupid, either buff all anti strikecraft weapons, because anti strikecraft were doing about 2 damage to them. 2!

Nerf the damage on ALL Tec ships, they simple do too much for being Rolling walls of destruction, my friend who i play with, he just builds 7 capital ships (along with 22 armor cobolts - only about 10 though) and defeats every encounter on the map. don't get me started on how their battleships can get 13000 Hull with 36 armor. thats even more stupid. (level 7 + which doesn't take that long considering nothing can beat them in the first place)

 

Vasari

Buff THE PHASE MISSILE DAMAGE if you want to keep the TEC the way they are, because right now, phase missiles are USELESS (unless vsing advent, then they own). I mainly play advent and I can't expand at all and by the time I can my TEC friend already has half the planets on the map when I have only 6 (and he has 20) - also buff the armor hp/points upgrades for the advent so that the buffed phase missiles don't just roll over everything advent (considering that unfair computers and up like to spam phase swarm frigates)

and perhaps fix the kostura cannon, it got nerfed to oblivion in the 1.2 patch (its now COMPLETELY useless, building one is purely 'for the lulz'

Advent

I feel that our starbase got a nasty nerf. The Tec and the vasari starbase still do upwards of 250-300 damage for each weapon, while the advent starbase - only does about 110-140, I'm not sure if this is to make the advent more attack orientated, but it makes playing unfair computer games damn impossible. cause I have to rush them fast which is something I Don't like doing in a sins game. oh and even though i can get upwards of 85% mitigation, its only useful if focus fired, completely useless if not.

We are working on Anti-Strike craft. The biggest issue is that the same craft can effect other vessels. Which can be bad.

The Kostura cannon is no.

As far as the Advent they have some of the best AoE abilities on their starbases. I rarely if ever lose an Advent starbase though I have lost several TEC and Vasari.

We will look into the others though we play against each other from time to time and don't see quite as many of these issue. Especially from Pbhead (Vasari player) who has a tendency to own the rest of us (TEC players) in matches.

I haven't notice any major imbalances like that...I generally play only TEC and it's fairly even so far. More strategy that decides who wins, but that's my opinion. Not necessarily fact.

Cat ... before you even try installing (FRESH NEW DOWNLOADS from #4529 on this page) the Mods ... Have you FULLY updated your install to v1.2 Via Impulse? I don't know what exactly is going on because by all accounts everything SHOULD and DOES work. I've redownloaded from those links (FRESH DOWNLOAD) everything and re-installed and updated Sins Diplo and then installed the mods per the above instructions on a completely different computer. Everything works properly.

 

Are you sure you've updated everything prior to install and that the instructions above are completely being followed to a T? There has to be something messed up whether from a bad download you are using something. It just doesn't make sense. [e digicons]:'([/e]

I'd like to say that I'm not taking any sides, but strategy games are a pain to balance.

Lonestar, keep in mind the factors that come into play with human players versus AIs. As previously mentioned, Pbhead takes us all out when it's 5-1 odds against him or better. At the same time, humans are interesting machines and I've seen some pull off tactics that just don't fit the numbers and others that just move like the computers themselves. To know where you stand, it's probably best to mix it up with players beyond the ordinary. I've played when Pbhead was not present and although I found that I survived much longer, I still suck as PvP. I can hold my own long enough for someone to save my ass, but I do okay against the AI.

On another note, the game mechanics can get tricky, especially when moving over to PvE. The AI won't use the rolling wall of destruction to its full potential, preferring to spam some normally crazy unit, ranging from escort carriers to nearly defenseless support units. And the AoE abilities (all abilities really) of the Advent are powerful, but require micromanagement, so the regular weapons are weaker. The same can be said of the Vasari, but instead of singularly powerful abilities, their abilities stack nicely, such as Shield Disruption with Phase Missile Swarm. I think the advantage of the TEC is that they are a very straight forward group, most like what we normally think of in relation to human warfare. As such, they are easier to garner effect from than the others, although all can be powerful in their own right.

Just my thoughts, but as Ryat has pointed out, there are things which we just know it's a lose/lose with the hard-coding.
