Multiplayer Games:
We've setup a thread for everyone to organise their multiplayer games in and also setup example times and dates for most people to meet up and start games. These are what we hope to be the main times for people to be around and want to play games together.

The times are:
4pm EST (9pm GMT) Saturdays & Sundays
9pm EST (2am GMT)
Saturdays & Sundays

If you want to organise other games please go ahead using the same topic to consolidate all the information in one place and hopefully get more games together within our community. These games are for PvP, PvAI & PvPvAIso come along and we'll get some games going!

Screenshots:
We've setup a thread so you can all post your screenshots to share with us the Distant Stars team and its players. Im sure we're all intrigued to see what kinds of battles and events you've all been having on the mod aswell.

Lore:
We know some of you guys love to role play whilst using Distant Stars, and here's a topic for you guys to post all of your role playing stories, character profiles and anything else you can imagine.

Maps:
Some of you avid map makers out there have produced some great maps but never really had them recognised because they've got lost. Well here's a topic for you to post a link to the download (we can even provide mirrors if necessary) a screenshot or two of the map for us all the preview and if enough people like it we'll even include the map in with the actual mod!

Please visit our website and for more information, change logs, downloads, and to report bugs. Our website can be found here: http://distantstars.mmobase.com

Bug Reporting

http://distantstars.mmobase.com/?m=reportabug

Please include as much information as possible, if you have an error log feel free to post it on these forums and we'll take it from there. If you can reproduce the error please include the error log (read below to find out how to enable error logs) and include as much detail on how to reproduce the problem.

To enable logging:
Windows Vista/Windows 7:
C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Windows Username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Setting
or
Windows XP:
C:\Documents and settings\<Your Windows Username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Setting

Open the user.setting file (using Notepad, Wordpad or any text editor) and scroll down to the bottom 7 lines from the bottom is the line:
LogOutput FALSE
Change FALSE to TRUE
LogOutput TRUE

and from then on any Log files will be saved to the debug folder:
Windows Vista/Windows 7:
C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Windows Username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Debug
or
Windows XP:
C:\Documents and settings\<Your Windows Username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Debug

If you get these log files to us (you can just paste them in to a forum post) we can hopefully get your issues sorted.

Frequently Asked Questions

All files are compressed using 7Zip to shrink the download filesize. To extract these files you must use WinRAR or 7Zip.
Any Patches should overwrite the original install directory, either by extracting over the original folder, or cut/copy & pasting over the existing file/folder structure.

1) My game keeps crashing, is there anything I can do to stop it?
i) Are you running the game on maximum (highest) settings? if so, lower them to High or Medium, there is a known issue with the game using up too much memory, there is nothing we can do about this, also no matter how powerful your pc is, it is affected by this issue no matter the pc it is not above this crashing issue, it is a game problem not a hardware one, so quite simply lower your settings. If you still have an issue with crashing see point two.
ii) Give us as detailed information as possible about the crash, what was happening at the time of the crash, what races, ships, abilities were involved. If you can supply a Debug Log (see above for more information about logging) and post a bug report on our website.

2) The loading screens and portrait pictures dont appear properly, whats wrong?
i) This is an issue with ATI based graphics cards (rarely affects Nvidia based cards) we're looking in to the issue.

3) Why dont you support converting Distant Stars in to TXT format?
i) Quite simply many things can go wrong with converting your mod to TXT, we cant help you with something you've probably broken yourself.

4) Can I mod Distant Stars for myself?
i) Yes you can however please do not distribute our mod or our mod that you have edited to the public. You must ask for permission to do so, we will regrettably stop distributing our mod to all if users abuse our work.

5) Your mod is in BIN format I can't edit the files, what can I do?
i) You can convert the mod to TXT format however we wont offer any support to versions of the mod that have been converted to TXT.

6) Why is Distant Stars distributed in BIN format?
i) Mods load faster in BIN format and are less likely to have issues in this format.

7) I'm having trouble installing the MOD, do you have any more instructions?
i) Carbon was kind enough to do some more advanced instructions out here.

8) Is there any way to make new maps for Distant Stars using GalaxyForge?
i) Within the Distant Stars Extras folder there is a folder called Galaxy Forge, Copy and Paste this folder (or its contents) over your original Galaxy Forge folder (or its contents) replacing any files if it asks you to. When you start Galaxy Forge next you'll be able to use all of our planets.

Or, the DIY approach (without custom icons):

ii) The GalaxyForge supplied by the devs will still work with our Mod, however to be able to access all of our planetary bonuses, templates, planet types and stars you will need to take our GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (found in the GameInfo folder of the mod) and place it in to your GalaxyForge folder, overwriting the original GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (if you still wish to make maps for the original game keep a backup of the original file). This will allow you to use all of the Galaxy changes included in our mod.

Note: Any maps made for Distant Stars will not work with other Mods. See #8.2 for DIY instructions for map making or take the appropriate files from Entrenchment, they're cross-client compatible.

Some statistics...

Since August 2009 to February 2011 we have had over...

400,000 Unique visits to the website
12,000GB (12TB) of data transferred from our website

That equates to over 60,000 Unique downloads of the entire mod, excluding the excess of 20,000 Patches downloaded.

Thanks to everyone that has supported us this far and making our mod as popular as it is!

I was curious to see if anyone in the DS team would be interested in assisting with this endeavor in case anything blows up.

We will help by giving advice and if they want to do it to their own PERSONAL DS mod they are welcome. We will not be doing it for the official mod though.

It's actually very easy to scale everything to approximately the right size and it isn't really all that much work...  I believe Teal had created a little utility to easily resize any planet desired a couple of years ago.  The problem is the time involved to actually play the game at the proposed scale.  That aside, my largest concern would be the outer galaxy bubble that displays all of the stars and skyboxes.  I'm not sure how dynamic it actually is, if it's predetermined by the number of stars and planets or if it just makes itself large enough to accommodate everything inside.  Probably the latter, but no one has ever really tried to cram a bunch of over sized objects in to see if it errors out or crashes.

Most people already play the current ranges with the speeds turned up and shy away from the larger maps because it's just too much ground to cover.  Now super size it.  What took roughly 20 seconds to cross now would take 5 to 6 minutes...  Forget the time it would take to cross a gas giant, or the truly massive to scale star gravity well unless you also up scaled the speeds on all of the ships to accommodate the now much larger sizes of everything.  Also very easy to accomplish, but could very well be a turn off to people like Carbon who like the slower speeds, or it could be a non issue since you still have to cover lots of distance to make anything happen.

I personally would like to see something made to put everything to scale (officially the ships were said to be from 10 meters to 1 kilometer in length, pre entrenchment) and rebalance the speeds of everything to match the new sizes just to see how it looks and feels.  It shouldn't effect system resources gameplay wise because the resources required to run it would be the same no matter the size if you didn't care how it looked, but the low res look of the planets and any artifacts in the images would be mega sized and overly apparent, thus forcing everyone to have to use higher quality settings the larger things start to become which would add stress on already stressed systems.  Unfortunately planets and stars would have to be on the highest settings, and possibly structures too since the ship yards would have to be bigger then the ships they build, which then means that little baby structures like mines and hangers and defense guns would unnecessarily be high res as well.

If someone wants to do it, have at it...  I'd use caution since it could end up just being one frustrating mess of a project.

on Apr 26, 2012

I think that there should be a scaling facot that adds auto res to everything, as for planets, there would be auto res fixed at certain latitudes/longitudes. Google earth uses auto res, the closer you are, the higher the ship/planet resolution. MY vision is pretty cool when you think about it, but a big fat pain to mod

Also can I make a lore map that has the birth of the advent?

[EDIT} sorry for the double post DX

on Apr 26, 2012

Depends.  If you're participating in the lore, you can create a lore map, otherwise, it's not a lore map even if you take names of stuff from the lore.  There are rules that have to be followed with those maps.  If you're just making a map, so be it, knock yourself out, have fun, go wild.

on Apr 26, 2012

what are the lore rules?

on Apr 26, 2012

The lore itself?  Read the OP of that thread.  There are no strict set of rules for that, merely guidelines we would like people to follow so that artistic liberties taken by people don't end up creating a conflict that screws people out of being able to create more content.  The point is to be imaginative and fun, but still being relevant within the settings established by the game itself.

As for the maps, there is a strict set of rules which are:

  1. You must be a lore poster, which requires a lore post...  An introduction of your faction with some description of it would be appreciated as well, or instead of a story piece if you don't have one wrote already, but still want to get things going.
  2. You cannot do a system that has already been "explored".  This is not the same thing as claimed.  Some systems are not claimed but are already explored, some systems are claimed, and have yet to be explored (particularly in the case of NPC factions).  Reviewing the map thread is an easy way to figure out what has already been explored.
  3. You must post a piece of lore to accompany the map such as a report from a scout, or your people settling in and exploring the richness of their home, etc. which also fulfills requirement 1 conveniently enough.  Simply posting a picture of the system and a link to the galaxy file is not good enough.
  4. You must use the Star names, colors, and relative positions to each other, as they are already technically "explored" by anyone looking at the stars in the region.  However, exact orientation of the system/map itself is up to the creator as there's no such thing as north/south/east/west/up/down in space.
  5. Minor systems must have 4 planets/moons or less, asteroids/junk/belts/wormholes/deep space/etc. do not count when adding things up.
  6. Major systems must have 4 planets/moons or more, and again, asteroids/nebulas/storms/black holes/etc. do not count when adding things up.

The big region maps can be found here as well as information on how to interpret the information shown:

https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/372058/page/23/#2604760

The political one would probably help out the most to see who's got what, Teal's faction is not listed on it yet, but she already claimed and explored Majannand...  Will probably update that sucker sometime soon if we have another lore poster.

on Apr 26, 2012

actually what I meant was a map that shows birth of the advent, there was birth of the TEC.

on Apr 26, 2012

A couple of notes.

One: You can create a map called Birth of the Advent and share it. Many of the custom maps included in the mod are not made by our team, I think Birth of the Trade Order included.

Two: If you wanted to give the map real story or background, you can go into the lore thread and write up a little something. The above rules are good if you want to interact with the Lore RP we have, but there are people who have written a little something just for fun. You can write something completely independent of everyone else, but we request that it fit within the mechanics and lore of the game/mod. That means no unestablished tech, sci-fi crossovers, and we frown on revealing what is chasing the Vasari, seeing that the devs haven't revealed it yet. Just make sure to label it as a personal story so no one confuses it for DS RP.

on Apr 26, 2012

okay, is it cool if I share the map on WC and link it back here?

This map was from Celestial Bodies. Hence the "CB-" in the name. It has nothing to do with lore.

None of the released are techically lore related. Strictly speaking about our DS lore. Except maybe Black-5.

As with mini mods, maps, lore, pictures, etc etc. Make and share to hearts content. Where you host it and such is up to you. Share it here...share it in the correct related forum topic. Share it somewhere else.

There is no rules except, copying the mod and claiming it as yours. Hence we like the mini mod idea....it lets people tweak the mod without changing the mod.

Have fun making stuff.

on Apr 28, 2012

I might sound insane by saying this but...

is it cool that eventually, about a few months (or till my bday aug 25th) I can be part of the team?

on Apr 29, 2012

Yes.  You do sound insane...

Most everyone here can create playable maps and write up stuff and answer questions, so if that's all you've got, then you should learn something else like creating particles, or meshes, or display an uncanny ability and desire to not only find, but eliminate bugs in the entity files (something I do quite well)...  You know, stuff that's in demand.

Everyone has a chance to become a team member if you have something to offer that's needed...  Or if you go to Tennessee and stalk Carbon all the while professing your undying love for him.  The more he says he doesn't like it, the more he really wants it.  It's like a test to see how easily you give up.

on Apr 29, 2012

^ That's how I got in!

on Apr 29, 2012

Hey guys I keep getting the checksum of 53488652.

Any ideas, I know it's wrong....

Thanks.
