Multiplayer Games:
We've setup a thread for everyone to organise their multiplayer games in and also setup example times and dates for most people to meet up and start games. These are what we hope to be the main times for people to be around and want to play games together.

The times are:
4pm EST (9pm GMT) Saturdays & Sundays
9pm EST (2am GMT)
Saturdays & Sundays

If you want to organise other games please go ahead using the same topic to consolidate all the information in one place and hopefully get more games together within our community. These games are for PvP, PvAI & PvPvAIso come along and we'll get some games going!

Screenshots:
We've setup a thread so you can all post your screenshots to share with us the Distant Stars team and its players. Im sure we're all intrigued to see what kinds of battles and events you've all been having on the mod aswell.

Lore:
We know some of you guys love to role play whilst using Distant Stars, and here's a topic for you guys to post all of your role playing stories, character profiles and anything else you can imagine.

Maps:
Some of you avid map makers out there have produced some great maps but never really had them recognised because they've got lost. Well here's a topic for you to post a link to the download (we can even provide mirrors if necessary) a screenshot or two of the map for us all the preview and if enough people like it we'll even include the map in with the actual mod!

Frequently Asked Questions

All files are compressed using 7Zip to shrink the download filesize. To extract these files you must use WinRAR or 7Zip.
Any Patches should overwrite the original install directory, either by extracting over the original folder, or cut/copy & pasting over the existing file/folder structure.

1) My game keeps crashing, is there anything I can do to stop it?
i) Are you running the game on maximum (highest) settings? if so, lower them to High or Medium, there is a known issue with the game using up too much memory, there is nothing we can do about this, also no matter how powerful your pc is, it is affected by this issue no matter the pc it is not above this crashing issue, it is a game problem not a hardware one, so quite simply lower your settings. If you still have an issue with crashing see point two.
ii) Give us as detailed information as possible about the crash, what was happening at the time of the crash, what races, ships, abilities were involved. If you can supply a Debug Log (see above for more information about logging) and post a bug report on our website.

2) The loading screens and portrait pictures dont appear properly, whats wrong?
i) This is an issue with ATI based graphics cards (rarely affects Nvidia based cards) we're looking in to the issue.

3) Why dont you support converting Distant Stars in to TXT format?
i) Quite simply many things can go wrong with converting your mod to TXT, we cant help you with something you've probably broken yourself.

4) Can I mod Distant Stars for myself?
i) Yes you can however please do not distribute our mod or our mod that you have edited to the public. You must ask for permission to do so, we will regrettably stop distributing our mod to all if users abuse our work.

5) Your mod is in BIN format I can't edit the files, what can I do?
i) You can convert the mod to TXT format however we wont offer any support to versions of the mod that have been converted to TXT.

6) Why is Distant Stars distributed in BIN format?
i) Mods load faster in BIN format and are less likely to have issues in this format.

7) I'm having trouble installing the MOD, do you have any more instructions?
i) Carbon was kind enough to do some more advanced instructions out here.

8) Is there any way to make new maps for Distant Stars using GalaxyForge?
i) Within the Distant Stars Extras folder there is a folder called Galaxy Forge, Copy and Paste this folder (or its contents) over your original Galaxy Forge folder (or its contents) replacing any files if it asks you to. When you start Galaxy Forge next you'll be able to use all of our planets.

Or, the DIY approach (without custom icons):

ii) The GalaxyForge supplied by the devs will still work with our Mod, however to be able to access all of our planetary bonuses, templates, planet types and stars you will need to take our GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (found in the GameInfo folder of the mod) and place it in to your GalaxyForge folder, overwriting the original GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (if you still wish to make maps for the original game keep a backup of the original file). This will allow you to use all of the Galaxy changes included in our mod.

Note: Any maps made for Distant Stars will not work with other Mods. See #8.2 for DIY instructions for map making or take the appropriate files from Entrenchment, they're cross-client compatible.

Some statistics...

Since August 2009 to February 2011 we have had over...

400,000 Unique visits to the website
12,000GB (12TB) of data transferred from our website

That equates to over 60,000 Unique downloads of the entire mod, excluding the excess of 20,000 Patches downloaded.

Thanks to everyone that has supported us this far and making our mod as popular as it is!

You mentioned that he just recently upgraded the graphics card, there is always a disc that comes with it that has basic video card drivers (usually like the 1.0 style or there abouts) so you always need to update to the latest video drivers for his card to make sure you have optimal performance. Just go to the NVIDIA website and follow the instructions for downloading the latest drivers and see if that helps.

on Oct 26, 2009

Sorry, I mispoke. He just updated the drivers. there has been no hardware change. Also, just a few minutes ago, he got a blue screen of death in regards to the Windows Video Memory Manager.

He was changing the resolution at the time, and had decreased it to it's minimum, trying to fix the choppiness in the frigate icons. Seeing that this had no effect, he brought it back up to max, and thats when it died on him.

on Oct 26, 2009

In that case it almost sounds like a memory issue. Somewhere his memory is being used by something else and its dragging down the system and then choking it to death.

That is about all I can figure out without actually messing with the computer itself. Sorry

I wish I could help more

Ok so i downloaded and installed the mod

the beta and the extras... when I start a game it was Distant sun but I do not see anything new that the mod did. Did I do something wrong? Or what should I be seeing?

What should I do to fix it? I see no new research

on Oct 28, 2009

did you make sure the file wasn't inside a file? that might be the cause

on Oct 28, 2009

@ kozer- what is your checksum, did you hit the apply button (you would be amazed how often people forget that), are you patched to 0.895

Just so you know, the music will change the moment the mod becomes active, and the background a lot of the time as well.

Whats the ETA on v.9? Is that the version that will include the Dynamic Battle System? If not can I use the Dynamic Battle System v.9 mod with this mod?

Thanks in advance

No idea what anyone is talking about. I moved it into the right spot.

when I start the mod I get the music... But my gameplay does not seem to have changed... hmm

...damn

on Oct 28, 2009

Okay

@U-LAK and everybody else that is wondering, we hope to have 0.90 out by next weekend if not earlier

as for the Dynamic Battle System is concerned we will not be introducing it in the system but a fellow modder will be releasing a version of it with our permission (give thanks to Mooster or ice27828)

@ kozer, I recommend redownloading the 0.85 edition then downloading the 0.895 patch. Then copy and paste the 0.895 info into the 0.85 folder (suggest renaming to 0.895) then apply and should work. Your checksum (the number in the upper right hand corner) should be 34832073. I hope that helps a little more.

Hi, I would like to tell you, that I also had problems with minidumps when I was starting a game.

Checksum was fine, normal game started fine, but I could not load this mod at all. I tried to install latest drivers for my graphics card, sound card and chipset. Also latest direct x etc... But nothing helped.

I have also downloaded full mod, from this forum which is latest version and also tried to download older 0.85 version and patch it to 0.895, but result was same.

When I have tried to run sins with dev. I have got debug log, which was full of something like this:

Failed to Create D3DX Effect 'C:\Documents and Settings\"user"\Local Settings\Data aplikací\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Mods-Entrenchment v1.041\DS\PipelineEffect\Prim2D.fx'...
(1,1): error X1507: failed to open source file: 'C:\Documents and Settings\"user"\Local Settings\Data aplikacĂ\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Mods-Entrenchment v1.041\DS\PipelineEffect\Prim2D.fx'

First thing which I have noticed was, that name Data Aplikací has an long i. Which english do not know. That is because I am using Czech version of windows. I could not solve this problem, because I cannot rename my documents and change destination where the mods are.

So what I have tried was, that I have deleted "PipelineEffect" folder, because all errors came only from files in this folder.

And after that, mod started up just fine and I was able play it. I am not quiete sure, what I have removed,  but it seems like sime kind of new effect for several things, so it might crash later on (did not have time to test it, have to go sleep now) but at least, I have find reason and some kind of weird solution.

Does anyone ever solved this problem?

on Oct 29, 2009

the Pipeline folder is from a previous mod that was put in (I think either Mansh00ters mod or Bailknights) some have had success removing this folder in solving the minidump problem, I keep forgetting about it because it never causes me an issue. Still not sure why it effects some and not others.

on Oct 29, 2009

Well, it might be because of different windows language.

I have got two question, if I delete that folder, I will lose some part or all new effect which were in there or they are not used anymore?

Second, If I will want to play this mod over the internet with my friends, will they have to also delete it, even when they can run it without problem or not? Just to have same "mod"

on Oct 29, 2009

As to the first, I am not sure having never done it myself.

As to the second, as long as the checksum numbers are the same you should be able to run together. (checksum number is found at the upper right hand side of the mod activation screen)
