We've setup a thread for everyone to organise their multiplayer games in and also setup example times and dates for most people to meet up and start games. These are what we hope to be the main times for people to be around and want to play games together.

The times are:
4pm EST (9pm GMT) Saturdays & Sundays
9pm EST (2am GMT)
Saturdays & Sundays

If you want to organise other games please go ahead using the same topic to consolidate all the information in one place and hopefully get more games together within our community. These games are for PvP, PvAI & PvPvAIso come along and we'll get some games going!

Screenshots:
We've setup a thread so you can all post your screenshots to share with us the Distant Stars team and its players. Im sure we're all intrigued to see what kinds of battles and events you've all been having on the mod aswell.

Lore:
We know some of you guys love to role play whilst using Distant Stars, and here's a topic for you guys to post all of your role playing stories, character profiles and anything else you can imagine.

Maps:
Some of you avid map makers out there have produced some great maps but never really had them recognised because they've got lost. Well here's a topic for you to post a link to the download (we can even provide mirrors if necessary) a screenshot or two of the map for us all the preview and if enough people like it we'll even include the map in with the actual mod!

Please visit our website and for more information, change logs, downloads, and to report bugs. Our website can be found here: http://distantstars.mmobase.com

C:\Documents and settings\<Your Windows Username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Debug

If you get these log files to us (you can just paste them in to a forum post) we can hopefully get your issues sorted.

Frequently Asked Questions

All files are compressed using 7Zip to shrink the download filesize. To extract these files you must use WinRAR or 7Zip.
Any Patches should overwrite the original install directory, either by extracting over the original folder, or cut/copy & pasting over the existing file/folder structure.

1) My game keeps crashing, is there anything I can do to stop it?
i) Are you running the game on maximum (highest) settings? if so, lower them to High or Medium, there is a known issue with the game using up too much memory, there is nothing we can do about this, also no matter how powerful your pc is, it is affected by this issue no matter the pc it is not above this crashing issue, it is a game problem not a hardware one, so quite simply lower your settings. If you still have an issue with crashing see point two.
ii) Give us as detailed information as possible about the crash, what was happening at the time of the crash, what races, ships, abilities were involved. If you can supply a Debug Log (see above for more information about logging) and post a bug report on our website.

2) The loading screens and portrait pictures dont appear properly, whats wrong?
i) This is an issue with ATI based graphics cards (rarely affects Nvidia based cards) we're looking in to the issue.

3) Why dont you support converting Distant Stars in to TXT format?
i) Quite simply many things can go wrong with converting your mod to TXT, we cant help you with something you've probably broken yourself.

4) Can I mod Distant Stars for myself?
i) Yes you can however please do not distribute our mod or our mod that you have edited to the public. You must ask for permission to do so, we will regrettably stop distributing our mod to all if users abuse our work.

5) Your mod is in BIN format I can't edit the files, what can I do?
i) You can convert the mod to TXT format however we wont offer any support to versions of the mod that have been converted to TXT.

6) Why is Distant Stars distributed in BIN format?
i) Mods load faster in BIN format and are less likely to have issues in this format.

7) I'm having trouble installing the MOD, do you have any more instructions?
i) Carbon was kind enough to do some more advanced instructions out here.

8) Is there any way to make new maps for Distant Stars using GalaxyForge?
i) Within the Distant Stars Extras folder there is a folder called Galaxy Forge, Copy and Paste this folder (or its contents) over your original Galaxy Forge folder (or its contents) replacing any files if it asks you to. When you start Galaxy Forge next you'll be able to use all of our planets.

Or, the DIY approach (without custom icons):

ii) The GalaxyForge supplied by the devs will still work with our Mod, however to be able to access all of our planetary bonuses, templates, planet types and stars you will need to take our GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (found in the GameInfo folder of the mod) and place it in to your GalaxyForge folder, overwriting the original GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (if you still wish to make maps for the original game keep a backup of the original file). This will allow you to use all of the Galaxy changes included in our mod.

Note: Any maps made for Distant Stars will not work with other Mods. See #8.2 for DIY instructions for map making or take the appropriate files from Entrenchment, they're cross-client compatible.

first off, with the black holes, someone spelled gravity wrong, lol, and black holes should have a much larger gravity well, and should be a type of star (rather than an anomaly)

As to the misspell, we will look at it

as to the other, well game mechanics say no to a star and yes to an anomaly and if the grav well as larger the AI cant handle it, (it can barely handle as is)

Help! I really would love to play this mod but I cant seem to get it installed right. I unzip into a folder named  "Distant Stars" in the entrenchment mod path (v1.041) and it shows in the game options, but when I activate it nothing seems to happen... THe menus all look the same and in the gameplay the Kol seems to have the same hit points as before etc etc....Can anyone help me?! Running Vista 64 by the way

on Dec 18, 2009

To respond to the black hole issue, there are a lot of things 'wrong' with the game. A black hole would not have planets around it. Nebulae would not appear within a star system (quite the opposite, really), Pulsars wouldn't have anything habitable around them, random maps would have to make all ice planets farther than volcanic planets, etc., etc., etc. It all really comes down to game mechanics and playability. Reality is no where to be found. (I even think we had a thread on scientific improbabilities of shielding systems)

To greyfox, after you enabled, did you hit apply changes?

on Dec 18, 2009

just unzip the file, there is no need to put it into its own folder

on Dec 18, 2009

Yes the AI horde is broken its my fault as a bad map maker. It will be fixed. In fact Im working on it right now.

OH....ok...so...

Some website stats for you all:

Since we have launched the website in August there has been a total of:

950.25 GB (GigaByte's) bandwidth used

Over 5,500 Unique Visitors to the Distant Stars website

Over 34,500 Pages viewed

Over 85,000 Hits to the website

As you can see Distant Stars has had a huge amount of traffic in the past few months, Thanks to you all for your continued support, bug reports and suggestions. We hope you all still love this mod as much once we finally reach that milestone of v1.0

....where in the hell is our community then?!?!?! WTH!!! HAHAHAHA....Im feeling other than Draak and Ryat yall are not team players Can I get some active participation in the community events!?!

on Dec 19, 2009

Oh...Draak and Ryat since you both went beyond the call of duty for what I asked for I had to follow suit with your RP themes

So here is mine its a bit long winded but its how I write.

Johnathan Trona (-Ue_ Code: Carbon), High Paragon of the 5th 'Carbon' Division, Unified Explorers Corporation

When the Advent first invaded Trader space, their vanguards and first waves destroyed most of Unified Explorers' systems leaving the corporation and partners in a desperate fight for survivial. Most Combat Divisions were recalled from the Vasari frontlines along side a call for aid from fellow members of the Trade Order/TEC. The first Combat Divisions to make it back to Unified Explorers( -Ue_ ) the 2 systems still controled by -Ue_ was Gold, Xenon, and Carbon. The High Paragon of each Divsion were as varied as the elements they are named after. Through the determination of the 3 Divisions they were able to save what remained of -Ue_. Despite the effort it seems the lines would not hold for permently. A drastic plan was needed.

For some time -Ue_ researches have been testing new colonization methods and equipment in the various anomolies found near the edge of Trader space.. One such anomoly was a wormhole classified as: Xccc783, which lead to a vast region of space far from any know planet or stars. It was unsure if the Advent who controled the system Xccc753 was located in knew of the distant stars the wormhole lead to and if they were already tapping into the resouces found in those systems.

It was decided that -Ue_ needed to relocated and take hold of those systems for the survival of the corporation and Traders elsewhere. So began the surge into now Advent controled territory.

Unprepared by the sudden sugical assault the Advent withdrew the bulk of their forces to new defensive lines, leaving Xccc783 open to begin the influx of colony frigates, cargo ships, and Divisions to the new systems.

And now so...the battle for the Distant Stars has begun...

The strategies used by the Carbon Division involve a heavy hand in support ships. Akkan, Dunvo, and Hoshikos make up 55% of the Division ships. With other Divisons requesting most of the hard hitting ship that usually make up the bulk any TEC fleet, High Paragon Carbon has forged his makeshift Division into slow yet steady tide of war. While many commanders perfer the bring as much firepower and Capital Ships they can get into every conflict. High Paragon Carbon pefers hordes of frigates and support cruisers to do the heavy lifting. Usually only fielding 2-3 Caps at any given time. Usually the sheer numbers of ships is more than most fleets can handle.

Huzzah, the -Ue_ gets its proper treatment! C'mon, people, and give the man more story to work with. Who knows what he can put together (with the proper input and editing, of course).

Ok one final question... If I throw all the files into the mod directory without putting them into a folder IE Distant Stars(I get the question to move and replace or keep both files, which should I choose?) the mod will not show up in the options menu to activate. Howeever if I put them into a folder it shows up... I activate it... (have even restarted the game to try it) and nothing seems to happen. Is distant stars just that similar to the original game? Things I should look for if so? REserch trees, capital ships HP and Shields etc etc. I played a random medium nothing seemed different.

The first and most noticeable difference for Distant Stars is upon activation the music changes on the main menu(s) before loading in to a game, it should be entirely noticeable the moment you activate the mod. Also the main menu and some of the sub menus have "Distant Stars" written at the top of them.

The mod upon extraction should extract as 2 folders and 1 readme.txt file. If it doesnt then theres already something wrong. You can then take both of the folders extracted the actual mod folder from the full 0.95 download will be called:

DS Entrenchment Beta 0.95

If you place that folder in to the Mods directory:
On XP:
C:\Documents and settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Mods-Entrenchment v1.041

On Windows 7/Vista:
C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Mods-Entrenchment v1.041

In the mods menu ingame you'll then be able to activate the mod, dont forget to hit "Enable Mods" the checksum you get should be: 36295747

Distant Stars adds new planet types so on Larger Random galaxies you'll notice some new planet types you've probably never seen before, the tech tree is practically doubled in length with some new technologies thrown in for good measure and some of the original technologies Ice & Volcanic colonisation have been renamed to Tropic and Hostile colonisation along with many other changes that should be quite hard to miss.

Ok then, well I am off to work. I will be sure to try this out tho, I have downloaded the same file I think (or at least named the same) but maybe I got a bad link, it was like 5007 files and none in folder when I extraced it into the path but I'll be sure to try it at work tonight and let you know how it goes thanks a ton!

on Dec 19, 2009

Let us know if your still having problems and we will try to explain it more.

on Dec 19, 2009

Ok here goes, I have the zip file on my computer, When i have unzipped it before I get the question for a bunch of files if I want to move and replace, skip, or keep both files. Which should I choose? Sorry to keep bugging you guys but you have been WAAAAY helpful... Also the whole roleplayer thing would be something I am interested in as well (I work 24 hour shifts as charge of quarters in the Army... Basically I sit around and play computer and video games, watch anime and do barracks checks every few hours to be sure no one is dead or dying or that the building is on fire lol) so i have some time to burn lol. Like longer games too but enjoy co-oping more then vs I'd have to say

-Thanks Ue!

Move and Replace all the files mate for patching (the small 5MB download or so), if you're using the full download you can quite simply just completelly delete the old version and use the new one entirely. We're glad to help mate.

on Dec 19, 2009

Ok I am a artard... I used the Extract button instead of just selecting all and dragging the files into the mod folder... I can install a 3D card and power supply just fine but basic files tasks still evade me lol

on Dec 19, 2009

Totally different beast, these mods. As for the RP, I have no idea exactly what Carbon is planning, so if you want to throw up a little origin story of your own it would be appreciated. At the very least the rest of us get a little good reading from it.
