Multiplayer Games:
We've setup a thread for everyone to organise their multiplayer games in and also setup example times and dates for most people to meet up and start games. These are what we hope to be the main times for people to be around and want to play games together.

The times are:
4pm EST (9pm GMT) Saturdays & Sundays
9pm EST (2am GMT)
Saturdays & Sundays

If you want to organise other games please go ahead using the same topic to consolidate all the information in one place and hopefully get more games together within our community. These games are for PvP, PvAI & PvPvAIso come along and we'll get some games going!

Screenshots:
We've setup a thread so you can all post your screenshots to share with us the Distant Stars team and its players. Im sure we're all intrigued to see what kinds of battles and events you've all been having on the mod aswell.

Lore:
We know some of you guys love to role play whilst using Distant Stars, and here's a topic for you guys to post all of your role playing stories, character profiles and anything else you can imagine.

Maps:
Some of you avid map makers out there have produced some great maps but never really had them recognised because they've got lost. Well here's a topic for you to post a link to the download (we can even provide mirrors if necessary) a screenshot or two of the map for us all the preview and if enough people like it we'll even include the map in with the actual mod!

Please visit our website and for more information, change logs, downloads, and to report bugs. Our website can be found here: http://distantstars.mmobase.com

Bug Reporting

If you want to report a bug please use the Bug Report feature on our website:
http://distantstars.mmobase.com/?m=reportabug

Please include as much information as possible, if you have an error log feel free to post it on these forums and we'll take it from there. If you can reproduce the error please include the error log (read below to find out how to enable error logs) and include as much detail on how to reproduce the problem.

To enable logging:

C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Windows Username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Setting
or
Windows XP:
C:\Documents and settings\<Your Windows Username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Setting

Open the user.setting file (using Notepad, Wordpad or any text editor) and scroll down to the bottom 7 lines from the bottom is the line:
LogOutput FALSE
Change FALSE to TRUE
LogOutput TRUE

and from then on any Log files will be saved to the debug folder:
Windows Vista/Windows 7:
C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Windows Username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Debug
or
Windows XP:
C:\Documents and settings\<Your Windows Username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Debug

If you get these log files to us (you can just paste them in to a forum post) we can hopefully get your issues sorted.

Frequently Asked Questions

All files are compressed using 7Zip to shrink the download filesize. To extract these files you must use WinRAR or 7Zip.
Any Patches should overwrite the original install directory, either by extracting over the original folder, or cut/copy & pasting over the existing file/folder structure.

1) My game keeps crashing, is there anything I can do to stop it?
i) Are you running the game on maximum (highest) settings? if so, lower them to High or Medium, there is a known issue with the game using up too much memory, there is nothing we can do about this, also no matter how powerful your pc is, it is affected by this issue no matter the pc it is not above this crashing issue, it is a game problem not a hardware one, so quite simply lower your settings. If you still have an issue with crashing see point two.
ii) Give us as detailed information as possible about the crash, what was happening at the time of the crash, what races, ships, abilities were involved. If you can supply a Debug Log (see above for more information about logging) and post a bug report on our website.

2) The loading screens and portrait pictures dont appear properly, whats wrong?
i) This is an issue with ATI based graphics cards (rarely affects Nvidia based cards) we're looking in to the issue.

3) Why dont you support converting Distant Stars in to TXT format?
i) Quite simply many things can go wrong with converting your mod to TXT, we cant help you with something you've probably broken yourself.

4) Can I mod Distant Stars for myself?
i) Yes you can however please do not distribute our mod or our mod that you have edited to the public. You must ask for permission to do so, we will regrettably stop distributing our mod to all if users abuse our work.

5) Your mod is in BIN format I can't edit the files, what can I do?
i) You can convert the mod to TXT format however we wont offer any support to versions of the mod that have been converted to TXT.

6) Why is Distant Stars distributed in BIN format?
i) Mods load faster in BIN format and are less likely to have issues in this format.

7) I'm having trouble installing the MOD, do you have any more instructions?
i) Carbon was kind enough to do some more advanced instructions out here.

8) Is there any way to make new maps for Distant Stars using GalaxyForge?
i) Within the Distant Stars Extras folder there is a folder called Galaxy Forge, Copy and Paste this folder (or its contents) over your original Galaxy Forge folder (or its contents) replacing any files if it asks you to. When you start Galaxy Forge next you'll be able to use all of our planets.

Or, the DIY approach (without custom icons):

ii) The GalaxyForge supplied by the devs will still work with our Mod, however to be able to access all of our planetary bonuses, templates, planet types and stars you will need to take our GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (found in the GameInfo folder of the mod) and place it in to your GalaxyForge folder, overwriting the original GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyScenarioDef (if you still wish to make maps for the original game keep a backup of the original file). This will allow you to use all of the Galaxy changes included in our mod.

Note: Any maps made for Distant Stars will not work with other Mods. See #8.2 for DIY instructions for map making or take the appropriate files from Entrenchment, they're cross-client compatible.

Some statistics...

Since August 2009 to February 2011 we have had over...

400,000 Unique visits to the website
12,000GB (12TB) of data transferred from our website

That equates to over 60,000 Unique downloads of the entire mod, excluding the excess of 20,000 Patches downloaded.

Thanks to everyone that has supported us this far and making our mod as popular as it is!

hi to all of you.

I´ve installed the mod and i really love it ! But i have the same problem like hiramas had; i only see "String not found" when i´m clicking on some of the new planets. So i cant see the stats of the planet. However, it is playable and the game does not crash.

I´ve installed the "normal" 1.0 mod WITHOUT entrenchment, and then installed the version 1.14-1.16 patch. my currentversion of the game is 1.16. So please tell me what to do, to see the planet stats and no longer "String not found" !!! (tried it several times to install the game ... means completly removed and installed it again ... nothing changes -.-)

Thanks to all for your help

the solution to my first problem was to install the englisch version of the game

Is the problem just on the new planets from the mod?

on May 27, 2009

Nacey, props to you and your team. This mod is fantastic. However, i would like to inform you that i am experienceing frequent minidumps on large - huge multi star maps as well as some custom maps as well. I have narrowed it down to 2 common occurances, when a game is just about done loading, being a vanilla or custom map, and the other common time is roughly 2 hours into a game. I have changed nothing in the files, and i know its not my computer's hardware by running tests and monitering temps, ( quad core overclocked to 4ghz, 4gb ram, ATI 4870 1gig and vista 64). And i would like to also add that i also run into a planet type where the string isnt found.

Ill try to debug it myself and if i am successful, ill let ya know

They will be included as far as I know in the next full download patch. If thats not the case let me know, I will send you them personaly.

I just downloaded the full version of .81 and I keep getting mini-dumps everytime I start a senario. Is there a way to fix this? Also, whats the name of the opening song?

on May 27, 2009

Hiho again^^

Ok, that could be a reason; i have the germam version installed. After the mod the whole game turned into English so i didn´t know that i have to re-install again with english version. I´ll try that and hope that it will wok then ... its not always a good surprise, when u colonize a planet, and then recognize its just a crap stronghold

Sound Effect Replacement MOD:
Enchanced and/or replaced sound effects and replaced Battle music, it mostly consists of the remastered versions of the Haegemonia: The Solon Heritage OST, Band Of Brothers OST and the menu music is from E.S. Posthumus.

Just to let you know its Elba from ES Posthumus

And on your point on the dumps on the full .81, I suggest you just download the 0.6 and patch your way up to .81 because I personally just do the patches instead of the full download, and I rarely do get the dumps

on May 27, 2009

I have't responded to this thread before this (I don't think), but i've been following this mod for a long time, and it just keeps getting better and better.

However, I just downloaded 0.81, and I'm still getting mini-dump problems.  Plus I'm getting a few "Strings not found".  Oh, and someone spelled Neptune and Ganymede wrong...lol. I can go in and fix that stuff, that's easy... but the mini-dumps are confounding. I'm not getting near as many as 0.7, but it's still happening.

Oh, and so far the mini-dumps are all happening at start-up (95% loaded), but if and when the game starts, it seems to run OK.

One other thing, can a star's diameter be changed so as to create a Red Giant or White Dwarf, etc?

Okay guys quick update for you here, apologies for not posting the forge tools sooner however I havent had time to test them thoroughly as of yet so if there are any issues let us know here if possible.

http://www.blacklotushq.com/sins/entrenchment/DS_Entrenchment_Extras_0.81.7z

The full download of 0.81 I have just discovered corrupted upon conversion to binary  & uploading to the web server. I'am currently uploading a re-release of the full download for 0.81 right now which will be available by tomorrow morning. My apologies for the inconvenience! (Please note the new full download for 0.81 will include the galaxy forge files).

I'am looking in to the string issues right now and the other issues reported and will hopefully have another minor patch released in the coming week.

However if you are using a client that is NOT English you will have to re-name the "English.str" file within the String folder (of the mod) to the language you are using.

For example, if you are using the German client you must rename the file "English.str" to "German.str" I hope this helps fix some of the issues you've been having.

Loving the mod, but just had a minidump error when selecting the ability on the Advent Halycon carrier that lets you see planets (Cant't remember the name). I clicked on it, there was a pause, then it crashed - I think it happened when the ability was auto used? Other than that, not had any problems with the mod. Makes the game alot more enjoyable - thanks for all the work you have put in!

as well as Ship Graveyards

seems missing or beneath a very disturbing name, so that i cannot find it.

The new full download is available and appears to have uploaded correctly it can be found here:

Glad to hear you're enjoying it, thanks for reporting that bug i'll take a look in to it and see if I can find the cause of it and clear it up asap.

Well spotted, the Graveyards were removed in the original entrenchment iterations as they were causing hell when converting Distant Stars to entrenchment, I may add them back in at a later date now that the mod has settled down and progressed somewhat since then.

Ah thanks for the tip with renaming the str-file. I will test it in a few minutes and i hope it will work then and no "String not found" notices will appear any longer ^^

I have to thank all for this great mod; it is really fantastic to play !!!

But  have one suggestion for future releases and changes : There is a point in the game (when u own 4-6 planets and they are fully equipped) where u get massive resources and money; so u can easily research everything in a short time (means paying for it ^^ researching lasts a while ^^). Of course u can change research time in the options menu; But when u get 500-1000 money/sec resources really dont matter any longer

So it would be nice to implement a option in the option menu where u can change the resource/money rate, so the game is getting harder; means : it should be a verry special thing to rech a 10/10 or 8/8 in the research tree or building a capital ship; with normal options i build capital ships like fighters ^^
